Advice ... NYC Long Call from ATL
Looking for advice on how to "best" sit LC from ATL as a 2015 hire NYC 7ERB. Seems doable except for the rare 12 hour callout. Specifically need advice on:
1) Booking worst case jumpseats - timing at 5 1/2 days prior or 1 1/2? Or can I count exclusively on non-rev?
2) Extreme commuting options like FedEx?
3) YS to make the schedule more predictable?
Thanks in advance!

Seems like the consensus here is clear. Dumb idea even if off probation. Am I misreading this advice column?
Also, wonder about this jumpseat booking plan. Does icrew allow you to book these 5.5 prior "to work" in this case? And if so, do you consistently end up cancelling them late in the game and mess with the commuting of others in the process? Would love to hear more from experienced people here to learn the process.

There are lots of pilots sitting long call for NY at home from much tougher commutes then ATL. Look at the last flights up and first flights out in the morning. Watch your position on the lists and YS as needed. Most pilots are smart enough to call in sick with less then 12 hours to report or at least 15 hours. Guys who call in sick in the 15 to 12 range need a IQ check. If you go up to NY on all your long call days from ATL you will be just about the only guy doing it. The guys staying home in Dallas and the west coast are the ones hanging it out.

As someone who commutes to reserve right now, I would never choose to put myself in this position. I intend to bid to a category where I will easily hold a line in the next AE. If you are going to commute, fine. But don't do it to reserve! Your every waking hour on call you will be staring at icrew. Yellow slipping is only slightly better because you don't get the trip until the day before and then many of he jump seats are already taken.
Good luck with your decision.
