Default Delta's pilot hiring pool is shrinking fast

A few years ago the number that flight ops discussed was over 15,000 pilots in our hiring pool. This week SD discussed pilot hiring and mentioned that "Delta is well positioned with over 5,000 pilots in our hiring pool." Since we know most pilots looking for a job don't apply to just one airline and the numbers back that up (15,000 to 5,000 in a few years) I would say we only have a year and a half worth of applicants. As the pool dries up so does the quality of the applicant and the success rate during the interview, sims, IOE, etc. This is going to be interesting...

At the road shows SD has been stating somewhat the opposite. He said they felt they would exhaust the tier one applicants and be hiring from tier two this winter. In reality he said the tier one pool is replenishing itself as fast as the hire from it and they don't see dipping down into tier two anytime soon. The 5000 number may be tier one only.

What are the criteria for Tier One vs. Two? Make it so Number One, that would still be correct?

I think he would have been more specific about who the 5k are if they were just the tier 1 applicants. He is trying to make it seem like all is under control and not to worry. If I were writing something to the pilots I would use the largest number I had and keep it vague on who was included in it. And that is exactly what he did.

The hiring situation is really bad. it just takes a cursory look to see what's about to happen.

Can you imagine them saying they're hiring anyone from Tier 2? I was Tier 2 but that's beside the point. By the time the candidate is brought in they would be the best available and in Tier 1 at that time. I'm loving the people we're hiring now but I'm a little worried about who walks in the door 5 years from now.

Easy snooty pants. Based on a few new hires from my company who Delta considers "tier 1" I think some of us scumbag "tier 2" or "tier 3" will fit in just fine.

You completely missed my point Quick Draw. They'll never "say" the candidate is Tier 2. No matter what tier you start in by the time you're called by default you're among the best available, tier 1.

I am a retired guy in the training department (DGS).
FWIW they told us we are done with tier 1 as of Dec 2015.

Working through tier 2 hiring 90 pilots/month for the first half of 2016.

I'm starting to believe Tier 1/Tier 2 is not real.

If you say we exhausted tier 1 already, then why do I know someone(actually many people) more accomplished, more experienced, etc than I was that can't get the time of day?

The only thing I think that separates Tier 1 and Tier 2 if there even actually exists two piles, might be that Tier 1 has serious internal connections ie CP of higher. That's the only possible similarity and even then I know guys that have zero connections that have been hired already.
