Default Christopher kern lec44 f/o rep candidate

I would like to take this opportunity to address those of you who are asking “who is this guy?” or wonder about my motivations and experience.
The dysfunction and denial we witnessed in the aftermath of the TA rejection is why I am running for office. It was like flying a precision approach, barely stabilized by the FAF and being directed to go around at the last second by ATC. We narrowly avoided ground contact and for a rather unsettling period of time kept wondering “who is flying this airplane”? For the time being, we appear to be properly trimmed, but we are not quite ready to reintroduce automation that would assist with the workload.

All the candidates bring a unique set of experience to the table. Some are touting their ALPA experience in particular. ALPA experience is important, but not exclusive nor unique. Too much of it may not be a good thing. If it is derived from a National level, is it useful to us at the Local level? Absent integrity, experience is worthless. I do not have extensive ALPA experience but I can say that I have never been asked to resign nor been subject to a recall while volunteering.

Have you wondered, like I have, how quotes from Sir Winston Churchill, Abraham Lincoln or Dr. Martin Luther King have benefitted us during this critical point in time? “Delta people, of course, are the foundation of everything we do. Delta’s success is really due to the long-standing culture here that is built around our employees – they are obsessed with serving our customers, and you can certainly see that in these performance numbers”. Those statements are from Mr. Anderson in this month’s SKY Magazine. I know history provides unmistakable perspective in your representation, but I will temper the focus on the past with an eye toward our future.

We have seen the results of politicism and if we are not careful we may inadvertently follow a path we specifically sought to avoid. I offer an alternative with principled pragmatism to protect and promote the pilot profession.

By now every member of Council 44 has received a nomination ballet. It could still be blank. Maybe you have penciled in some names of candidates Perhaps you have penned in some names, but the ink has yet to dry. It is incumbent upon each and every one of us to turn in our ballots and participate in this very important election. Now is the best time for the course correction we seek. You will determine how much of a heading change we need.

I will be publishing the second part of my perspectives and positions on critical issues shortly. Stay informed! Stay engaged!

I am Christopher Kern and I humbly request your consideration and vote to become your next LEC 44 First Officer Representative.

Default Christopher Kern C44 Rep Candidate Update

In the first of a two part series, I wish to offer my perspectives and positions about current critical issues. This is in response to the vetting process expressly sought by many members. My intent is to provide you, the line pilots of Council 44, information you are seeking as you make your considered decisions about whom will represent you.

RECALLS AND RESIGNATIONS

I fully support the recall process convened in our and various other Local Councils. The resignations of MEC Officers and Committee Members are proper and appropriate. This is not a “witch hunt” nor is it an act of revenge upon those who voted affirmatively for MEMRAT. It is a consequence when those who represent us appear to be no longer doing so. It is accountability. The concept may or may not be “fashionable”, but it certainly comes with the job of being your Representative. Let’s not duplicate the MEC’s reaction to the failure of the TA by committing parallel acts because we didn’t like the outcome of the recall meetings. Our engagement and resolve can be channeled more productively in the upcoming elections for new Representatives.

THE REJECTED TA

We are all familiar with the term “fifty plus one” as it pertains to the successful passage of negotiated agreements. My fellow aviators of Council 44, I submit to you that such a metric is a prescription for rejection, and based upon the most recent survey questions reported via social media, I fear the groundwork is being established for another disappointment. You see, I was taught that anything less than 70% (sometimes 80%) is considered a failure. The bar is set too low. Questions from the latest survey, suggesting a minor tweak here or there to change a “no” vote to a “yes” vote tells me that our feedback is not being acknowledged correctly. Let’s raise the bar. If a 65% rejection can send a message imagine what will resonate throughout our Company, the industry and Wall Street if we achieve an even higher rating of approval with a quality TA worthwhile of MEMRAT. I will work toward that goal as your Representative.

MOVING FORWARD—AN ALTERNATIVE

While I am not privy to survey results used to construct Section 6 openers, I can provide some insights as to what I would be looking for when assessing the merits of a TA and what I think an acceptable TA must look like. While it has been proposed we need to provide updated input to survey results, I believe the postings provided in social media outlets offer a wealth of fresh data useful in evaluating the worth of a TA. The current PWA plus improvements is my baseline. A TA will have to reflect the current state of our industry and our Company. We are recognized for our professionalism and frequently distinguished from our competitors so any subsequent TA will need to account for the distinctions routinely bestowed upon us.

Certain Quality of Life (QOL) issues must be honored and respected as sacrosanct. Investments in the line pilots (Profit Sharing) must be protected and maintained. Global growth and route expansion should benefit the line pilot and not be a reason to liberate Scope or JV Agreements. The PWA is not a venue to engage in what I will call the “bull in a china shop approach to the perceived elephant in the room” remedy offered for Sick Leave. Proposals made to us during negotiations that conflict with Mr. Woolman’s philosophies published in his “Rules of the Road” should be deemed detrimental to our Culture and denied consideration.

Ultimately, we must share in, but not become victims of our own Company’s success.

In the second of this two part series, I will address and share my positions about DPA vs. ALPA, Restoration, ethics, transparency and technology. I will also offer my strategies for advancing our profession and how DALPA must evolve or face extinction.

I will be attending the meeting of 28 September and plan to utilize the limited floor time offered by our current LEC to directly engage in conversation with you. You can also contact me via email with your questions, ideas, comments and, yes, your criticisms. Feedback is something I welcome, not something to be banned, syphoned or otherwise curtailed.

I am Christopher Kern and I humbly request your consideration and vote to become your next LEC 44 First Officer Representative.

Default Christopher Kern LEC44 F/O Rep Update 2

In this, the second of a two part series, I wish to offer my perspectives and positions about current critical issues. This is in response to the vetting process expressly sought by many members. My intent is to provide you, the line pilots of Council 44, information you are seeking as you make your considered decisions.

DPA or ALPA
Several years ago I submitted my card to DPA agreeing with the philosophy that this gesture would put ALPA on notice. I have not renewed my card nor have I contributed financially to DPA. Over the last 20 years, I have flown for three different air carriers, with ALPA being the representative body of the pilots. I have already experienced Union switching as one of those carriers made the shift to ALPA. I know friends flying for other carriers represented by independent unions. They have their problems and issues, just like us. I have seen and personally experienced ALPA at its best and its worst. ALPA is by no means perfect. What organization is?
The effectiveness and capability of any organization is directly related to the individuals who comprise it. Look no further than the Company we fly for as proof of that postulate. We are at a monumental point in time. We have the rare opportunity thru the upcoming nominations to replace individuals and effect reforms. It has already started with the election of our new MEC Chairman and Negotiating Committee.
I may disagree with those whose crew bags wear Green but I do not dismiss nor discount your ideas. On the contrary, I empathize with your disgust, disappointment and frustration. While we may differ on the means and methods, we share common ideals. I am reaching out to you specifically for your support and help to advance the changes we both fervently believe are needed. You are right, DALPA and ALPA must evolve otherwise it will become extinct.

RESTORATION
Restoration is a word in my vocabulary. It is a goal to work towards that I support. It is not a catch phrased blind cause to hit a brick wall or drive off a cliff. We have a strong hand, some will say the upper hand, and we will eventually find out who has the winning hand. Until someone folds we can be assured that the Company will raise and call at every opportunity they can. This is the least we can expect in a high stakes situation such as this.
Restoration, however, extends beyond the context of our PWA. It also applies to the manner I must represent you in order to restore your faith in ALPA.

TRANSPARENCY
I favor and support increasing transparency. We all understand there are situations that mandate the need for closed proceedings but they should not be used for controlling or containing disagreement and dissent. If I ask you to get involved and engaged, you have to know what is going on.

ETHICS
I have been advised that a successful campaign involves one that omits making promises and avoids use of the term never. No one has mentioned anything about guarantees or the word always.
Accordingly, I guarantee you I will make mistakes and I will not please every single one of you each and every time at all times during my term should you choose me to be your Representative.
I will, however, always endeavor to conduct myself and Union business in a manner that is above reproach.
There is no other way.

TECHNOLOGY
There is a growing call to use technology to its fullest for Union business (streaming videos of proceedings and increased use of electronic balloting). I am not sure what progress DALPA has made on this matter, but I intend to research this issue, learn of any impediments and work to overcome them. Nothing detracts a member’s motivations to participate faster than having to use paper proxies and ballots.

Speaking of paperwork, ballots are on their way to you at this time. To nominate me as your LEC44 First Officer Representative, write “Christopher Kern” on the ballot and return the ballot before the upcoming nomination meeting of 28 September 2015. You can return it via US Mail via the preprinted envelope (don’t forget the stamp and allow for delivery time). You can drop it off in the ATL Crew Room ALPA Box by 26 September 2015. You can bring the ballot with you personally, or have a friend bring it on your behalf, to the meeting which will be held at The Hilton Garden Inn (Airport North) from 1300 to 1600. I will be attending the meeting and plan to utilize the limited floor time offered by our current LEC to directly engage in conversation with you. Please keep the questions, comments, ideas and feedback coming.

I am Christopher Kern and I humbly request your consideration and vote to become your next LEC 44 First Officer Representative.

Default Nominate christopher kern lec 44 f/o rep

Council 44 Members,

As you are well aware by the blitzkrieg of emails, including mine, the nomination process is in full swing.

I want to take another moment to distinguish myself from the other candidates.

I voted NO, STATUS QUO on TA 2015.

I voted IN FAVOR of the motions to RECALL Council 44 Officers.

RESTORATION is in my vocabulary.

ORANGE adorns my crew bag.

I SUPPORT our new MEC Chairman, Captain Malone.

I IDENTIFY with Captain Malone’s philosophies about REPRESENTATION, REFORM and ADVANCING THE PROFESSION.

I have NEVER BEEN ASKED TO RESIGN NOR SUBJECT TO RECALL while volunteering with ALPA.

I BELIEVE in the ‘bottoms up’ approach to representation. My CONVICTION to that principle is not subject to conflict nor compromise.

We are not rocket surgeons, morons nor gender referenced anatomical “whiners”. The way I see things we are no longer North or South and even D. P. A. shares commonality with A. L .P. A., which is, of course, P ILOTS. If nominated, I know whom I represent, the Delta Air Lines pilot.

Let us not succumb to politicism shaping our decisions in an attempt to counter strategies promoting a split vote. In doing so, we most assuredly will find ourselves in the exact same situation we are valiantly trying to change. Stay engaged! Stay involved! Stay informed! If Captain Malone is to have a fighting chance at success, he will need the support of the most ardent individuals to progress the change. RESOLVE to vote for those candidates. We have made ourselves known.

Finally, for those of you who have voted for me or are considering voting for me, thank you! Please keep the feedback and questions coming. I will be attending the meeting on the 28th.

I am ready, able and willing to serve!

Respectfully,

Christopher Kern

Good luck, Chris!

I worked with Chris at TSA and ATA, and can vouch for his character.

Chris was in my new hire class, outstanding individual with a varied background, airline furlough survivor and if Integrity had a middle name it would be Chris Kern.
