You can't ever the discount the possibility of a subordinate trying to supplant their own judgment to your instructions, can you? In which case, you just yank the leash back.
The fact that the MEC oversees the NC tells me that whatever is happening is happening with the MEC's consent. How could it not, especially considering they meet constantly. Conclusion: some of the MEC isn't happy, but they don't have the majority, so they blame others. The fact that it's been happening over, and over, and over, over a broad range of topics involving or not involving the NC, tells me it's a power struggle. Two sets of guys want to in charge, one set isn't getting their guys in successfully, within ALPA, or outside of it, so they set up these sorts of accounts to discredit their oponents. If they have to slaughter their own guys or a deal in the process, it's OK.
In parallel to this, there is a philosophical debate to be had over constructive engagement, concessions, etc. I think it's being overshadowed by the power struggle.
I think most everyone here is smart enough to see both things are going on, but most guys are afraid to separate the power struggle, from the legitimate debate, lest they be labelled.

Good, reliable information warrants well-informed, coherent debate which leads to effective decision-making. However, we are constantly given vague updates from closed-door meetings held by our MEC, while being told not to pay attention to rumor or innuendo.
To name a few....
1. Survey Results (not published)
2. Contract Opener (vague)
3. Weekly Updates (vague and repetitive)
Rumor and innuendo, is basically all the line pilot has before being thrown a TA and told to get behind it. I've been making a conscience, effort on reaching out to my reps and usually the response is one of non-committal, agreement.
Sink, you write up a post like this after starting a thread saying that by discussing rumors we're are costing ourselves money through disunity, however the MEC and NC can engage in their "power struggle" at the expense of our 12,000+ pilots. Hypocrisy doesn't even begin to describe it. If you can't agree with that then I sincerely encourage you to do some soul searching to see which is more important, the union or our pilots.

June 4th
I can't decide which event to attend. I have written a letter and sent it to the folks I think will be in attendance to help me determine my schedule. If you would like a response also please feel free to copy and paste mine. I have provided emails below.

Dear MEC Member,
I am writing to you because I may be unable to attend the upcoming MEC Special meeting. I know as a member in good standing I am always welcome to address the MEC at these meetings. My understanding is that most of this meeting will be held in closed session, excluding members from sensitive subjects. I also know that by invitation of a MEC member a person can be admitted to special session. I am requesting your invitation to attend those special sessions. This is not an unprecedented request or an unusual situation. As you know many experts from ALPA, the government and even the leadership at Delta including Mr. Richard Anderson have both attended and been allowed the privilege of presenting during closed sessions before.
In the event that I am restricted from the closed session portion of the meeting I would like to remind you that if any vote or topic is presented that you would like to consider further you are within your right to motion to table the vote or discussion. The meeting timeline may not allow you to consider all the information presented to you fully. There is no deadline to end debate of any issue if you need to review information presented. Time alone away from the other members to reflect on the event or to consider carefully your decision is prudent and should be encouraged should any member make such a request. We have elected you because we trust your judgment and you will take the time for due diligence on all matters that are of importance to the 12,000 plus members.
I await your timely response.

You left out a few people to ask permission of. The "shadow MEC". Excuse me, the "subject matter" experts.

No idea. But just going to throw out the idea that had the MEC not sent a rep; I would wager that you would be screaming about 'those arrogant and out of touch dictators' in Atlanta not coming.
Just saying.
More importantly, does anyone know what went down at the meeting?
