]To add, the classic answer is one can withdraw 4% of the 401 money each year with about an 80-ish% probability of not running out of money. If interest rates stay where they are, make it 3%. The other classic answer is replace 70% of your pre-retirement income in retirement. The 415 programs were not designed to replace pensions, it just worked out that way.
You're taking the risk that, over your career, the principal will grow--A LOT.
In timbo's example, you'd need about 3.5 mil to replace 200k in final year income. 200,000 x .7 = 140,000. 3,500,000 x.04 = 140,000. The Scotch low light in KIX DL Lounge is ON.

I'm all in favor of us getting significantly more than we are currently getting. But no one should ever look at it like they're "unable to retire" on less than 3.5 million.

In my mailbox:
All CJO Recipients,
As we move into the beginning of 2014 I want to provide each of you with an update regarding the status of pilot hiring at Delta Air Lines. In January the first true “off the street” (OTS) candidates began their Pilot Indoctrination training class. Following the nine day indoctrination training program, all of the new pilots began training on their assigned aircraft. There was a mix of assignments including the B-717, A-320, MD88/90 and the B-737 series. In February additional OTS pilots are starting the same training footprint so we’re moving in the right direction.
In March, the number of “flow” pilots will increase because we will be incorporating the first group of Compass Airlines’ pilots into the training footprint. This will reduce the number of OTS pilots that we can accommodate in our spring training classes until we receive approval from senior Delta management to increase our hiring authorization beyond the 300 currently authorized. We believe the need exists for these additional training slots and we’re very optimistic that they will be approved in the months ahead.
In September all “flow” pilots authorized for calendar 2014 will have been accommodated leaving all remaining 2014 training slots to our OTS pilots. We are very optimistic that ALL current CJO holders will be offered a training slot in 2014 although we cannot specifically guarantee that at this time.
As I’m sure you are all aware, Delta Air Lines led the airline industry in all categories in 2013, including profitability, and we anticipate an even stronger performance in 2014. I believe you have chosen well in making Delta your first choice for employment and we’re looking forward to incorporating your unique skills and leadership abilities into Delta’s Flight Operations team!
Best regards,
