Not much of a decision.
He'd only be a captain at DL in two years if willing to coverage three airports on reserve indefinitely.
Meanwhile the SWA F/O who lives in base is making the same at W-2 time with 5 more days off each month and don't even try to compare vacation months.

Of course if he gets tired of flying captain in a narrowbody he COULD bid over to any of a number of different widebodies and fly international - holding a nice line I might add - or he could wax poetic about that 737 he could be sitting in the right seat on over at LUV. gtfo
Money - as has been said on here numerous times - isn't everything. And the point is that he made the decision that made sense for him. I was not trashing him for it at all. I was merely pointing out that his potential for movement at LUV isn't all that great right now. You made the discussion something else.

Right. We are going to hire enough to make him a captain in 2 years then stagnate. He'll be on reserve forever. He is obviously an idiot.

Dozens per days of commuting each year that won't happen, while having the most productive schedule in the industry and great vacation.

I made the discussion about how it is a no-brainer for the pilot to drive to work despite being in the right seat, even though it will likely be a longer upgrade.
