How bout a new hire that shows up, gets the seniority number, and the right after indoc, oh yeah, I have to go back in the military next week for a three month course for a new aircraft. Really? Did that just come up in the last two weeks? Law violation? No. Abusing the system, yes IMHO.
In this situation, is he making his unit look bad? Yes
Would the company be justified in avoiding hiring other guys from his unit? Probably.

Slightly apples and oranges to the mil leave scenario but, in my experience, I know of a lot more guys like me out there who "did it right" and deferred their start at Delta for months than the abuser you describe.

It happens. I love our military, but a large part of DAL's staffing problem is 50% of new hires get online, then take mil leave. Whether long term, half a month or the weekend warriors.
Like I said I LOVE the military, and they have the right to take MIL leave... But it does impact staffing. That is all. Don't read to much into this.

I assume you meant 50% of all mil hired which makes sense since that is roughly the separated/retired ratio. Of course most of the guys who separated will take some amount of mil leave, and DAL knows this in advance. Sure, there is a DB here and there that pulls some long term unexpected BS, but to blame mil leave for any portion of DALs staffing problem is 100% b-effing-s.
DAL decided when to start hiring, how many to hire, and at what pace. Staffing problems are brought on by management, not new hires who are up front about military commitments. I'm not reading anything into this, you're just wrong.

So where did you get the statistic that 50% of new hires drop mil leave? Considering only about half the new hires are mil to begin with, that would be 100% of all mil hired drop leave.

If I had it all to do over again, I would say 'screw flying' in the reserves. Doing coloring books or whatever still gets you to the point level you need (I believe, although I have been removed from it for a long time) without having to give up so much of your free time and drop a DAL trip. I couldn't get a flying job when I got out so I punted the entire thing and hence get no military medical when I leave here. Had I done a flying gig, I would have had tio give up a lot of DAL flying (which paid more) and been on the hook for a deployment. It would have been much better to hang out and drink coffee with the Chiefs once a month. Of course everybody's assessment is different.

Gunna agree with Mike here. Feeling I'm getting is that some folks are having sour grapes over someone else's perceived good deal.
If someone can make the fact that they are juggling two jobs, one with serious personal risk involved, work out well. I'm happy for them.
I'm retired so didnt particularly care, but I recall pointed questions about Guard/Reserve status and any upcoming commitments when we were handed CJOs. I think the company could pretty easily make a case for termination for the dishonesty it would take to pull off the examples listed here.
Dropping 5 year orders after indoc? Not buying it. Gotta be a lot more to that story.
Sure sign wars are winding down. I read lot less whining when "mil leave abusers" were coming back with holes in their planes.
Looking at 717B daily trip coverage should make it crystal clear how good the company is with manning appropriately.
