What he's saying is, knowing where you fall within a class isn't as valuable to know as it might seem. You pretty much know by SSN whereabouts you'll be. Beyond that is solidly within the 'nice to know' category.
And a class of 40 could be, say, 38 M88 NYC and 2 717 NYC. Then it's all much ado about nothing, 'cause pretty much everyone's going to the Maddog in NYC and the rest are still doing nearly the same.
I'd devote all the prep time into following the threads about AEs and future fleet growth instead, found in the Latest & Greatest thread and AE discussions.

Thanks for your input but you aren't the target audience. The guy clearly knows more than the rest of us trying to give that advice.

As far as knowing the SSN rack and stack, I agree with both sides. On the one hand, yes, you really need to order what planes you want so you're prepared for anything. On the other hand, it's kind of nice to know where you actually will fall. Yes, that's a crapshoot since you rarely get EVERY single SSN submitted, but if someone wants to do the work, why stop them?
Food fight's over. Now go enjoy some pie.

statistically speaking, the "9"s aren't the norm at all. And that's only about a third of the class chiming in. Bummer.

It remains junior regardless of the most recent class drops. You'll be able to get in there without a problem and reliably for the foreseeable future via an AE.
No worries. Just pick an aircraft that gets you back to NY in the next AE. (advanced entitlement)
Refer to this grid and for an idea:
I was hired 12/7/15 and am already moving to LAX 717B From my class drop of NYC 717B in April having never flown a trip in NY.
My seniority number is right around 12830. You'll see where just that much seniority gets you and doesn't, generally. It's pretty obvious anything in NY is pretty junior.

You'd be surprised how people's minds are changed on day one of indoc after their first sip of kool aid. Or after they hear that they'll hold a line out of training on the 88.
As far as your response I quoted above..... HOPEFULLY Delta weeds people with attitudes like yours out. I was overall pretty impressed with how professional the organization was when I was in ATL. The number one guy in a class might select the 88, 2-4 might select the 717, then none of this "where you sit on the list" matters. You're on property at Delta Air Lines. You fly whatever you want in one year (a few exceptions, B777, 350, etc.). Be happy you're here. Leave your attitude you displayed in your above post at home. Nobody wants to work with someone like that.
Also, in your case I would pay close attention to the social media policy in Indoc. It isn't that difficult to figure out who you are if they want to. Good luck dude, and seriously leave that attitude at home. Otherwise I hope they find you in your first 399 hours and take care of it.
LOL----after positing I realized you don't even have half of the 60 people in your class. Proving your efforts futile and a waste of time. Hell, I guess throw me on the list for March 24. My last four are 9998. I'll be taking whatever plane you wanted.
