If you don't mind a commute or living in a crashpad while on your 30/168 rest period, currently you can print money as a NYC 717 FO. Even a relatively new one.

I see NYC in my future. What is 30/168? While on reserve and living in a crashpad, how many days a month could I expect to be off and back in ATL (ie not on short or long call)? I think I would prefer to live at a crashpad vs commuting to a long call, just to avoid the stress. Thoughts?

Im Pretty sure he is referring to 30 hours free from duty in 168 hours (7 days).

Very undermanned in the 717, more so on the B side, and even more so in NYC. I just looked at NYC daily trip coverage for December and saw GS#8 and GS#9 assigned (as well as a few GSWC). Most new hire NYC FOs don't live in base which means the lion's share of premium trips are gobbled up by a few well positioned pilots (or end up out of base). I was told by a reliable source that the FO on GS#9 was paid 190 hours in December (and he is not senior enough to LCA buddy-bid). In ATL there were a lot more GS but since there are about double the number of pilots; many of whom live in base, the highest I saw was 4 GS in December. Obviously DEC is an oddball month due to both xmas and NYE, and there was a huge line of T-storms on xmas eve that generated a lot of premium time, but overall I still believe there's nowhere else a new hire can make as much money.

The bottom line is if you want to earn as a junior FO, you need to be willing to do what others are not. I'll let you figure out what that is .

I like what you're selling Mike the Viper-driver!
I'm a Nov 05 CJO and am planning to commute from DC to NYC for the foreseeable future...assuming we ever get out of the pool

And before I get b@tch-slapped all over the place by the trolls, I know that NYC is not guaranteed and I may have to commute elsewhere in the meantime. I'm just happy to hear the NYC 717 good luck story corroborated by more than 1 person. It gives me hope while I'm swimming...
