Hey, it used to be based on DOB within each class, but then some numbnutz sued, claiming reverse age discrimination. So now it is what it is. This is why it's not a good idea to defer a class date.

[So if it was a class of 100 OTS people and I have a low social security number I might as well have interviewed a month later? The people that interview after me jump the line??

That doesn't seem to make much sense... ]

It actually makes a lot of sense. Your CJO date determines when you'll get called for indoc, period. Your seniority number is based on the date you start working for the company. Since everyone in your indoc class starts on the same day they need a completely unbiased way to rack and stack you. Delta chose last four in reverse order.

My last company chose DOB, so seniority was truly senior... for that indoc class. But a 22 year old CFI who started in the indoc class two weeks before me had a higher seniority number than me.

If you start getting your panties in a wad about whether it would be smarter to wait for a later indoc class because you want a lower seniority number but a higher indoc ranking your head will explode.

While at NWA, I had a navy buddy call me who had just received a class date. He wanted to defer a month so he could move his family and get settled before starting class. I advised against that as We were in contract negotiations at the time. He decided to defer. Two weeks later we had a contract with a 5 year B-scale. His decision cost him about 50 numbers and a bunch of money.

DOB method cost me over 35 #s over the current method as I was second youngest but had a middle last 4.

I believe your comment was towards those griping about how it works, but if this was specifically aimed towards me, thanks. However, since I've been airline flying since 1995, it's a bit overdue.

Yeah just a general comment. No matter how you do it someone will feel a little butt hurt. Zodiac sign, wife/girlfriend attractiveness, total net worth are some other options.
Personally I wanted to go by height as I would have been #1 of fifty not 48 of fifty but they didn't ask me. In the end we all got furloughed together so it'll be another 15 yrs before I see the effect, but by then a lot of the older ones will be gone.
Now id like to quote Hillary "at this point what difference does it make"?

Well, you are not going to have a class with 100 OTS in it, 40-50 would be the max. And since that seems to amount to two weeks of interviewing/CJOs at the rate they were going, it sucks but only a little.
