The water was great here in the pool. Just can't wait to get out of it finally.
Yep...lost over a year and all those #s! Not by choice...Heartbreaking! I was in a VERY enviable position! Still am I guess.
Glad to be back, though! Explanation via PM

They can give 6 or 7 short calls a month and on most categories most of the time you will get short call or a trip. When you do "sit long call" it usually won't be for long before they give you something else. You will rarely start and then sit for days on long call on a reserve period. Very rarely these days.
The best you can count on is nothing on day one before 10am, although statistically its usually several hours later than that. You can try and snipe the best trips for you (yellow slipping) if you know you're going to fly anyway.
You'll hear legend and lore of guys with long "reserve beards" and some who have to go to the sim to get current, but these days you will fly and fly a lot in almost every category almost all of the time. Chilling out at home very often as a commuter on long call is mostly a pipe dream as well. Most long calls you will see are things like day 3 of 6 on call, or the last day of reserve after finishing a trip, etc. Unless you live in a select few markets, there is no way to commute on long call while being in compliance with the commuter clause as almost every city pair has blackout periods where you won't have 2 (or even 1) flights for a worst case scenario.
Don't plan on much long call for a while.

Long call til converted, but plan on being used, a lot, especially the next couple years (you'd be off reserve long before then anyway).

I'd say the 717 is probably the only junior plane you can do this on right now, and it's all luck and timing. 88s and ERs fly their tail off on reserve it looks like from browsing daily trip coverage. Also, the captain I flew with yesterday commutes from FL to NYC (Jr capt) and sat long call at home. Dunno if I would do it on probation though

I'm 717s living in ATL, had a line since I started in June of last year, started bidding reserve in Jan. Before this week I had 30 hours for year. I've been called twice (both 1 day out and backs), Yellowslipped 2 trips and greenslipped 2 trips... In March I got the nasty gram about going to the sim (hence the yellowslips)... And I had a ridiculous beard for my GA drivers license.

If you're senior in category, and its not too short staffed, and bid to work the first week to 10 days where you're the last to get called, and then stack your off days towards the end where you'd be number one for bucket finally but are now off and unavailable, it could still work. But things like that are the exception and will become even rarer. Company put us on notice to expect a summer of love with several categories for at least the summer, but its logical to conclude that will spill over into pretty much anything a new hire can hold.
And current/future trends aside, 12 hours long call isn't nearly enough to sit at home as a commuter for the majority of pilots outside of a handful of ultra high frequency destinations, especially probies.
