Sometimes I think the Mad Dog has a bad rep among new hires just because of misleading posts on this forum. New guys need to realize that about half of what you read on here about the MD-88 being some sort of medieval slave ship is said in jest. We like to have fun with it around here. The Rube Goldberg whiskey compass mirrors are an easy target.
It has its quirks for sure, but its a good solid jet.
I certainly wouldn't avoid it for the wrong reasons.
If it gets you to the base you want or a better quality of life or a bigger paycheck, I wouldn't hesitate to bid it.
Oil stains on your shirt and glycol in your coffee means you're part of the club.

I have the same question regarding LAX. I'm still not decided between 7ER and 73N to get me the soonest to the west coast.
I know 7ER is shrinking and 73N isn't.
So I guess I'd spend more time on reserve on the 7ER compared to the 73N.
How is the reserve in LAX on both planes (QOL speaking) ?
Thank you

Going forward, who knows. My guess is the 73N as a growing fleet will be the better pick (I guess I'm biased) especially with the -900s coming on line. I flew a ship the other day that was 10 days post delivery.
Also, the junior guys on the 73N seem to hold a line fairly regularly since reserve goes senior (at least right now). The trip mix looks to be a fair amount of east-west/west-east coast redeyes and other domestic with some Mexico (mainly Cancun turns) mixed in there. There is the occasional central America layovers in Costa Rica and El Salvador.
My guess is the ER guys do lots of domestic plus a fair amount of Hawaii runs, which sound nice. The ER flight deck is huge, and probably more comfortable on the longer legs.

I had the choice of both and picked the 73N. A gal in my class also picked the 7ER and we will be LAX based effective 2 Mar. So it took the same time to get LAX regardless of aircraft.

Jetnfast, how long did it take from Indoc to get you awarded LAX ?

Timing was everything. An AE came out the week of indoc in Nov so we all put our preferences and I think I found out about 3 weeks later. Even though there was no vacancies posted for LAX 73N B on the Jan AE people still got it because enough people bid out with all the movement happening. I think I already have about 5-6 people junior to me on the list (out of 85-90).

Quick questions for people with DTW base knowledge.
Which A/C based there?
Specifically, 737 vs 320....similar sized base? is 737 growing there with deliveries?
In short, I have a high SSN, would like DTW 737 (after a while in NYC of course), but will change mindset to the 320 if DTW 737 is much smaller, much less movement, or will take a crazy long time.
Thanks!

Looks like 73 is a much smaller category, but movement might be quicker. I can't speak to the growth plans.

Anyone looking for a cheaper lodging option than the airport hotels for initial training? I am in a private room in a 5 bedroom/4 bath single family house for less than half of the cost of a hotel room. I am sharing the house with other Delta training bubbas. If you are interested, send me a PM and I will get you the details.

I'm a LAX 7ER newhire( April 14) .in ATL for the first 6 months. I could have held a line in March but needed specific days off for a vacation later in the month. Reserve QOL isn't bad I get the days off that I want and very rarely sit short call. If I get short call I usually just high yellow into a trip. So far most of my flying has been Hawaii. FWIW guys junior to me are holding lines on the 73N. Also according to summer projections LAX and pretty much all the other 7ER bases except DTW are seeing an increase in staffing over 2014.
