It will go to whatever email your friend puts in for you. Putting your Delta email there will not generate the app review. For that you have to submit the rec from Flight Ops/Admin/Pilot Selection. That has all the details.

You need to know what recommendation he is speaking of.

If he puts your email address on the airline apps page (which is the website that you officially apply to Delta on) you will get an email in which you will fill our your info and rec. THIS IS NOT AN INTERNAL! It will not generate an automatic pulling of his app. To do this search Pilot Recommendation Process in Deltanet. It walks you through it. Basically its an email to Pilot Hiring with the Subject "Pilot Recommendation" and then who you are recommending in the body. No frills, they don't want reasons why. Keep it short basically. You will then get a form letter saying they will do it within the timeframe (30 days I think).

And how often can that be done?

Is the one-per-year rumor just that? Or is there an unwritten expectation of some kind?

Once per year. You can recommend as many people/year as you want but you can only do it once a year for each individual. That said, even if another person recommends that person within that year period, their app won't get scored again. So, its imperative you ensure that the person's application you are recommending is Delta Pilot Hiring ready. I am talking about internal recommendations. The normal recommendations on airline apps are totally different.

Two things... I am outta touch with the whole hiring thing. My friends and I all have been in the majors or sub-majors for years. I just pass stuff on.

1) Was in a RJ jumpseat the other day. Asked which airline is No 1/2/3. They both said Delta. Now I'm sure you could counter me on a number of issues but this is what the RJ operators told me.

2) My bud at JetBlue said they are hiring the bottom of the bucket. Guys w/ no degree, DUI's in background and other skeletons that will prevent you from hire at the Delta and maybe the others.

Any of the big 3 will at this time, place and moment be a great career for anyone. Depending on where you live, the commute you will have and aspirations all of the big 3 are by far the best move.

Then you have the others... Cargo, Southwest and the rest (JetBlue, Spirit, Frontier and Allegiant). You can make a decent career at any of the airlines I stated above. But just like being a doctor and what med school and program you are accepted into, it may come down to what airline calls you or what floats your boat. Obviously the big 3 will pay more, you can work less for more, have a better retirement, better work rules and medical. The cargo operators will pay well but have a different type of flying which some like and some don't.

Anyways, I am off my soapbox and thought those two points I came across this week interesting enough to share.

Cheers.

Take it easy with those folks with no degree equating them with being in the "bottom of the bucket" and looping them in with people with DUI's.

A lot of them are ambassadors to aviation and have a lot to offer.

I don't think he meant it that way. Its no secret that pretty much all the top airline jobs either require a degree, or even if they don't they heavily, heavily prefer one. So when an airline hires a lot more in that category than all the others, it can be (trigger warning!) described as bottom of the barrel simply as an expression in the same way that an airline hiring a "tier two or three" candidate (even with a degree and no DUI, etc) would be called that as well.

Heck for that matter, when airlines who had the asinine 20/20 vision requirement finally got rid of it, I'm sure that expression was used as well.

There's some really good pilots with no degree or who have had a DUI and have a lot to offer. But every airline has their "tiers" and a degree is vital to most at the moment, regardless of the morality of that or of the stellar exceptions out there that haven't been hired but probably should be.'

to be fair, anyone with a brain is going to tell you that your shop is their #1.

Default Official hiring numbers for 2016......

Pilots hired:
1,237 total
1,124 men (91%)
113 women (9%)
0 other (think Caitlyn Jenner)

47% military
53% civilian

Youngest 24
Oldest 58
Avg age 37

Military flight time:
11,500 hours high
1,508 hours low
3,415 average

Civilian flight time:
23,000 hours high
2,050 hours low
6,937 hours average

584 military pilots hired.
653 civilian pilots hired.

Source: ALPA communication

So this is 100% fact. If you want to be hired by Delta Air Lines
1. Apply. Application should be complete and flawless.

2. Update your application every 45-60 days.

3. Seek recommendations from current Delta pilots (internally through pilot credentials).

4. Prepare for an interview.

5. When the invite comes, brush up on your interview study materials. Wear a nice suit and bring your best attitude.

6. Get your CJO and have a good career.

I know it's frustrating for some people who have not gotten an invitation. Do what you can in the limited areas on airlineapps to make yourself stand out. Sell yourself.

Best of luck again everyone.
