I don't know what they can find out, probably all they want to providing they're willing to spend the resources to get it.
Why would you want to spend your career wondering what skeletons are waiting to manifest themselves. The aviation community is relatively small...
Own whatever you own. If you called in sick a ton due to bad luck and forces beyond your control, own it and explain about it. Called in sick a ton to go skiing, own it too but realize you reap what you sow.

I agree with you completely and I don't have any letters sent or multiple sick calls or anything but just wondered what other ppl did for future reference.

The Delta interview invite email specifically tells you to be prepared to discuss your attendance history at your prior airline. The military guys in my group didn't get any attendance questions, but the regional guys were grilled with several specific attendance questions. Not sure about sick leave, but I would imagine they can't ask you about that.

The HR person in my interview asked about my attendance. It was kind of odd but I highlighted that I had missed two mil flights when my wife was having our kids.

It kind of depends, but they CAN ask.

I know of a specific person that has a spouse that got cancer. Multiple occasions of sick leave, FMLA, and whatever else you can think of to get time off to take care of the sick spouse.

They were grilled pretty hard about it in the interview. The fact that it was all taken to help care for a cancer stricken spouse didn't matter.

Another common question is "how many patterns have you started that you were not able to complete?"

Depending on where one works, even despite 117 fatiguing off a pattern at a regional ISNT uncommon.

Define "multiple sick calls'? If you use up your yearly allotment it means you're smart and taking full advantage of your benefits and not flying sick. Anything beyond that might be suspicious.

They were grilling the candidate about WHY the person took time off to care for his ill wife?

It was more about the frequency and amount of time off, but yep.

And NO, I wasn't in the room, and no I don't have access to anything else. But knowing this person, knowing their record, having flown with them, as well as the fact that they can check off a few boxes that DEFINITLEY put them into the "tier 1" category, it seemed a little, well, "strange".

They've hired a few sick time abusers, so long as it wasn't recent abuse. However, I doubt anyone would get past the panel with an attitude in your example above.

The key to the panel is to own up to your past mistakes, and know the Delta core values/rules of the road, and relate them in your answers. For the knowledge test, study the gouges, and make an outline of the subject matter. Don't stress over the knowledge test too much, even if you feel like you've failed it, don't let it affect the rest of your interview. Luminosity is best for cog prep, and Aerocrew solutions for panel prep.
