I am in my 36th year here (DAL/NWA/REP/NCA) as a 59 year old and I only fly to a few Asian destinations (TLV maybe once a year). Never have I considered this job to be boring. I enjoy the professional colleagues I work with but at times get frustrated with our pilot managers (desk flyers).
This career path has allowed me and my family opportunities beyond comparison and I still get to play with small airplanes (owner/operator).
Either career path (corporate, airline or military) is a good one as long as it is your passion. For me, I choose the airlines and haven't been disappointed.
I wish the new guy good luck!!

Dang. It doesn't sound the least bit boring to me. Being to able to have very good seniority for at least the last 15 years with your choice of days off. If you get bored with the plane and destinations, then just put in a bid for another plane for a while. Does it sound more exciting to you to keep switching companies and starting over at the bottom? Most of us are envious of this guy's postion.

Just finished recurrent training at DAL.
The instructor for day 2 (great guy) spends most of his time working training issues and schedules...
He said if DAL hires 60 a month for the next 10 years we'll still be under staffed (he's done the math).
He said the training dept has been told to spin-up for training new hires for the next several years.
Just a rumor, I know. But a good rumor.
Best of luck to those applying and hope you get good news soon.

We could be right around the corner from the next 9-11, or Global Economic Meltdown, or Merger, or, or, or...
So, while I hope everything stays the same, and Delta continues to make $2.6 Billion a year, forever, and they do hire 8,000 pilots in the next 10 years, if we just look back in history, we'll see -nothing- stays the same for more than about 5 years.
Good luck gentlemen, we're all counting on you!

Our current number 1, Haley, just celebrated his 41st year last month and has 1 more to go! I've heard he's a fantastic guy, too. Even though he slotted in at #2 in the SLI, he's virtually been #1 along with Cal due to the 777/744 fence. Anyone know how long he was at the top of NW pre merger?

Yeah...if everything stays the same, sure enough. The problem is, nothing stays the same. The only thing constant is...Change!

Agreed and I should have mentioned the plan changes weekly.
I should have said: "THIS WEEK'S PLAN IS...."
But still, good luck to everyone applying.

I'll have over 39 years if I go to 65... the first 7 sure have gone by quick. I'd be twitching if my entire career was going to be spent in say, a 737 with no other opportunities, though. I've flown 5 different aircraft types since I've been here, enjoy training, and planning on adding to that count.. I love the variety of equipment and the variety of routes that you can end up doing. It's a great airline for someone as ADD as myself.

The narrowbody - widebody fleet composition makes the majors the best in terms of variety to suit your needs. Heres some food for thought though: We always think of widebody as a senior privilege. But realistically, wouldn't you want to do widebody intl flying when youre young, and then as you get older and prefer not to switch timezones, then go narrowbody domestic? The proof of that theory is UPS. Since they have a single payscale, check out which aircraft and flying goes senior, and which goes junior. Domestic 75/76 goes way senior, and 747-400 intl goes way junior. While Im not necessarily a fan of single payscale (unless its amazing), but its interesting isn't it?
