Do you think ATL will remain an option for new hires in the early part of next year? What would be better, the 71 or the 88? I see the 88 pays a little more (after year 1) and, I imagine, the 71 is a little nicer/more enjoyable to sit in. How might the trips compare? Thanks!
Kingairp,
Once the hiring kicks in most new hires will be able to be based anywhere there are 88s or 717s after the seat lock ends.
Guys are getting caught up in the "its taking 3 years to hold xxx" mentality. Well that is true if we have not hired in 3 years. During the last big hiring cycle (1996-2001) pilots were bidding off their new hire seats (mostly FE) while still in initial training. Since then two things have changed, no more FEs, and a 1 year seat-lock for new hires.
These changes will push out to the 1 year mark the time a new hire may have to wait to bid off their assigned seat.
I predict that by summer of 2015 almost all new hires will be able to get to any narrow body FO seat and base withing 1 year.

As long as you're not at the end of a hiring burst you'll likely be able to get to your base of choice within two months of getting done with OE, if not sooner. Keep in mind that means your base of choice has to have the equipment you got during indoc since there's a one-year lock on your aircraft as a new hire. As for the 88 vs the 717, everything I hear from a friend who went from the 88 to the 717 is how much he loves the 717. If you're like me and all you know if the 88 (as far as Delta aircraft are concerned) then the maddog is A-OK.

Why would anyone bid 717 over MD88? The shorter legs on the 717 will mean you'll be flying more legs per day for probably the same pay. The AirTran guys used to do up to 5 or 6 legs a day in that thing, how is DAL scheduling their crews on the 717?
If people are going over to the 717 for the modern cockpit, well I guess that's one plus. But its basically an RJ lifestyle. So what are the advantages of going 717?

That's good info. Suprising that theyre about the same. If it stays at 1-3 legs in a 717, then makes it sound like a good deal.

You can't really compare the bid packages yet considering the vast difference in the amount of flying. There are what 4 717's flying in December. The category is in the very early stages of actually flying.

It is not going to stay at 1-3 legs per day in my opinion. Right now there are only a handful of cities for the plane. It will change considerably as they add more cities and planes. Give it a year. Most guys bid over initially to get better seniority and many guys had several months off waiting for the planes to arrive on property.

^^^This. Just wait until the full load of the DC-9 (and retired RJs) is handed off to the 717 fleet and then compare. I would bet huge sums that the 717 will average well north of 1-3 legs per day.

I have a family of four and use the Gold HRA plan. It is $286 per month for medical and dental. The vision plan is an extra $20 a month for a family of four. The provider is United Healthcare.
