Yup, from Sept. 1984-June 1992 or so, I was out of Pease. If you saw NH AIR GUARD painted on the boom, it might have been me, espeically if it was a very long mission over water to England or such, like Desert Storm, because being junior, they would usually throw me on the crappy stuff! We once flew back from Okinawa, non-stop, 15 hours, two pilots! But we took turns sleeping up front.
We also did a lot of local training work with the 141's out of Maguire of course, and C5's from Stuart, the FB111's out of both Pease and Plattsburg, the F106's then F15's out of Otis on the Cape, and A10's out of MA and CT. Great fun that.
As I told my KC135 instructor, when I first got to Castle, "This is something I've wanted to do since I was about 14!"
He said, "What, fly a Tanker?"
I said, "No, work in a gas station."
Luckily he had a good sense of humor.

Another friend who is a Guard guy and Delta legacy got the nod as well!

My friend got the interview invite today. Off the street active military.
What are the thoughts of the APC collective. If an active duty guy approaching 20 yrs gets an interview invite but hasn't set a retirement date, should he establish one prior to the interview?

As I recall I gave them a "window of availability" (plus/minus a few months based on terminal leave, ect). I had not set a firm retire date yet.
I'm only guessing here, but I think the hiring folks aren't obsessed about your timeline for availability, as long as you can be employed in the "near future".
Again, still guessing, but I think once you're offered the job your "file" is sent to the desk which works out your actual report date. They'll talk with you about your actual report date and "flow" you in with other new hires.
Your mileage may vary, but that's what happened with me.

That is a tough one. If I were him, I may just pull the trigger and set a date. It seems like if you get the interview, they want you to go work for them and it may make it easier if he has a no joke availability date so that he can get a class date.
I am personally retiring next year at 20 years on the nose. I figure anything after that and I am essentially working for the government for half pay. I set my avail date based on taking terminal leave plus house hunting TAD for a total of 110 days.
