Oh, I agree that I don't think a furlough is coming. Just correcting the record that the last time DAL furloughed the pilots lost and a lot of us spent a long time away from the property. What I did learn from the last time, however, is to always have an "alternate." Don't let it surprise you if it does come around.
I wouldn't say we lost - I would say it was a draw. I was in the very last group furloughed and thus out the shortest length of time, only 18 Months. If not for the NF clause the company could have furloughed more and kept them out. As it was, the guys on FMII made out like bandits, some getting a few months pay without working. I think the fact that the NF clause caused this is a good precedent to have. On the other hand I am a little doubtful of our unions desire to fully press the issue should it arise. The union guys are pretty sharp, but for some reason they really don't seem as concerned about scope as I feel they should be - different priorities I guess.

i talked with a union rep the other day that was certain that the no furlough clauses and triggers would hold up. He said on top of that most people have no idea how ridiculously expensive it would be to the company to furlough. Combine that with the fact the company has been trying very hard to keep morale up and follow through with all the promises they have made to the government about layoffs, you have alot of things pointing to no f-bomb.
With that said, i personally think the regionals are going to feel the brunt of all of this just as mgmt has been saying. they want to pull down the regional flying as much as possible so we'll see how the cards fall. i'm personally optimistic but realize that anything could happen. If it does, then there are worse things that could happen.

Thanks for changing the tone of this thread. Too many Debbie Downers. I think us guys at the bottom of the list will continue to see displacements but not furloughs.
BTW It's not too hard to have a backup plan that pays better and has a better QOL than commuting to reserve as many of us at the bottom are.

You are right RVR. But isn't it bizarre that our union would negotiate a clause (and pay for it, because it obviously wasn't a gift) that would then be deemed unenforceable? I'm sure that those who've gone before me bargained for the clause and gave up something in return. Then, the no furlough clause seems to be not what was intended. That's my only point. I don't think we're headed down that road again and I pray that we don't. Its horrible for the guys who are let go, and the senior guys pay a price as well as they are displaced. It sucks for everyone. Hopefully, and I firmly believe this, Delta is the place to be and our merger only means greater and happier days for us all.

Well played - and kudos to Super. I'll bet my last penny that there will be some other types to remind us that "Feline Aids is the #1 killer of Cats" (Debbie Downer SNL reference for the early to bed crowd) within a half page of posts. I had a very similar conversation the other day in New York with our union rep as well. And, I'm sure some "wiser than us" type will explain the real deal here shortly.
Until then, I agree that it is refreshing to hear a little bit of "half-full" stuff once in a while. Like the rest of you, I'm preparing for the worst - just not forecasting it's arrival.

Hey Scoop, I got ya. I guess it depends on where you stand (sit). Hard for me to say we got a draw from the company when we had a no furlough clause and I was furloughed for 6+ years. I understand it could have been worse. Still, a no furlough clause should mean exactly that...it doesn't.
Did you bypass your recall at DAL? I thought that you guys started hiring again in 2006?
