I got the opposite impression. If you go down to where the graph is, it says pilot block hours for March are down 5.4% year over year, but total number of pilots is only down 1.2%. So we are more overstaffed than we were a year ago
While your optimism is much appreciated, I interpreted it as, Crew Resources "moving bodies around" to more appropriately staff the categories. (i.e. surpluses on the 747/765/777, and vacancies on the MD90's)
Hope you're right and I'm wrong. From where I'm sitting, I can see the "bottom of the list" pretty easily.

Nothing like bouncing along the bottom....
Brings up a good question: Carl what would it take to get you and your peer group to the beach. I know you like the job like the rest of us, (maybe thats the problem) but is there a number or situation to fly west? (not that far West...... yet )

Oh my god gross!!! Anything more than one and you may qualify for "crazy cat lady/person" title And if you have 3 or more it is a sure thing. (Sorry cat people, I'm just teasing)
It could also be referring to displacing more widebody guys, though.
In my initial read, they seem to want to get the short term plus up from the WB ranks for the MD88/90 but, if there is any truth to the rumor of keeping the 9s a little longer and if there is truly a wave of hiring in our future, they wouldn't want to swap the training department with a massive wave of displacements.
So, this might lead to hiring. Of course, that is assuming anyone with an MBA is capable of thinking strategically as opposed to tactically.
