Rumors from the "big meeting last week":
AE first couple of weeks of Nov. smaller than expected, little shuffling of staffing only
Hiring not planned but needed to cover expected retirements so possible late 2012
An Extra 30 737-900 possible due to our outstanding options
Expect an order for 777's...no time frame but possible. Do not expect to see any 747-8/A350 at DAL
Numbers are going to be flat for the next 1-1.5 years due to economy. EU especially disappointing mainly due to economy over there, mainly Greece dragging everyone down
Pacific and South America doing well but need more,China will be the biggest economy in the world in our lifetime. DAL is positioning to be #1 there look for more JV's
Look for those said 777 orders to go place that we don't go...ie Malaysia
Lots of fuel hedging talk....should listen to the podcast from last week.
The best line of the day:
Richard see's no benefit of more animosity, he wants the contract done by the amendable date!
Just regurgitating what I was told.....

I believe it was also said DL will need to hire 7000 pilots in the next 10 plus years but none in the near future like you stated.

Sad isn't it? Went through there last week and we were the only mainline jet on the ramp.

Interesting. The numbers on the flight ops website show about 3500 retiring in the next 10 years (through 2021), with another 3800 going 2022 through 2026. Looks like they're planning on some measured growth, or trying to get ahead of the 800+ retirements per year after 2020.

In 10 years 3500 are retiring but we're hiring 7000?

Maybe that double the retirement coincides with 130 739s coming on line within 10 years?

Really? I like the airplane, but the systems automation is anything but 21st century. There are a few goodies like rnp, but that's mostly software and computer magic. The nuts and bolts date back to the middle of the last century.

I was based there up till this past March. I commuted out of there last week and was left speechless when I saw that all of the departures fit on TWO monitors. Two. And there were about twelve monitors. Very sad. I looked into flights to ATL from Lexington and Louisville because the flight options to CVG were so bad.

I heard a big rumor about CVG from an airport employee (not a DAL employee). Apparently someone is renovating some old gates there. They believe it is SWA. Anyone else here the same?

I'm going through training in ATL right now. The break room rumor was that we are indeed getting more 737-900s and we may be getting them earlier ... much earlier than expected because Boeing believes AA is going to default on theirs.
