They already have. After almost 5 years of negotiations the NMB kicked them to the curb and iced them ending all efforts at mediation. With zero progress and no hope of progress the pilot group fired those who came up with that strategy and put in place a more moderate group. That group in turn hired ALPA to assist in the negotiations and provide the political clout to get the process back to the NMB and moving again.

Formal and highly publicized "openers" are pointless. They've become counter-productive and actually a detriment to getting a final agreement.
Now that Moak has ushered in his new age labor relations with constructive engagement and the recovery compact and all that, I wouldn't be surprised if this time around we collaborated with our management counterparts and decide to dispense with the kabuki ritual of "openers".

Negotiating in public is a detriment to both sides. Ask UCAL mgt. how beneficial puttting out a public opener was for them...They are unifying the pilots faster than CALAPLA and UALAPA could have ever dreamed.

Keep closed negotiations closed.

Read all the materials, do some of your own research, spend real time thinking about the contract survey and your "dealbreakers". Take the time to fill out the survey. Be ready to show for SPC events when called upon.

Always remember that family time is important and that time spent away from home is time you'll never get back.

If you are on SWA, yes. On DAL, you start writing a letter....

We need to get their attention, and sending in the card means you'd like a vote, not that you're ready to throw DALPA away. How has SWAPA done for their pilots? Our dues numbers are huge, and if DALPA doesn't want to respect what we want, then we should seek other alternatives. I really hope the DALPA opener is positive and reflective of our wants. I won't let them manage my expectations. I will fill out that survey and I have expectations of my own, as should we all.
They trailed all the legacy's until 2004, the height of bankruptcy season. They have NEVER pushed the bar higher in any contract they ratified. They only "lead" because everybody else slid backwards. They are the ULTIMATE in proactive engagement with their management.

So what do you really want from your bargaining agent?

Does it really need to be about "pushing the bar higher" or "leading?" So big deal they didn't "lead the industry" or "set the bar" prior to our pay cuts. They were certainly competitive. Otherwise, they wouldn't be at almost our inflation adjusted C2K levels of compensation now. I don't really care if I'm the "highest paid." It's not a contest and I don't care about bragging rights. I just want to be paid appropriately.

BTW, who's leading and setting the bar higher now?

The other new factor since our last section 6 is the obvious desire of the National Mediation Board to have total control over every aspect of labor relations in the entire industry. It seems the new way of doing things is that labor and management don't really negotiate with each other anymore but instead both sides negotiate with the NMB until we arrive at something that is acceptable to them.
The NMB has moved way beyond their traditional "mediation" role and are now basically dictating the terms of employment in the airline business.
There may be a backlash coming however. The flight attendant situation is so outrageous (not being allowed to vote no to unionization) that the Congress might be awakened.

This thread has always been a quick ref to what is going on, I hope that it is not ruined and becomes a contract ***** board for the next several years. No one is going to come to get the latest if they have to weed through fifty pages of contract crap.

They, SWAPA, saw the opportunity was there and took it. DALPA is our agent. I want someone who believes in me, like Jerry Maguire in that movie. "help me help you" needs to be the attitude, not "reading a balance sheet" or "understanding hedging.". I want "here is what you deserve."

Do we have many guys regaling the pax with stories of their military heroics and resume? I've personally heard this a few times, and my brother-in-law just had the same experience on an -88 the other night from ATL-PNS.

Maybe I'll start doing my own version of this:

"Ladies and gentleman, you'll be relieved to know that I have accumulated many thousands of flight hours flying between such airports as SBN, AZO, MKE, etc. I have flown many light piston aircraft, hold type ratings in various Regional Jets, and am a Gold Seal CFII/MEI . . . . . . "

The only people who think pilots are cool are little kids and other pilots

No disrespect meant to our military pilots/vets. I just find the self-congratulating PA's a little nauseating.
