Agreed-I've seen multiple friends on FB declare how they are not only boycotting delta, but also making it a point to tell everyone they can to do the same. Of course what comes up is the American Airlines commercial in the terminal thanking soldiers coming home. "See, American gets it." Unreal.

Wow, you must be real junior if you can't hold NYC, but I guess NYC is second fiddle to DTW for the most junior base.
Funny story, last trip had an long layover in DTW, so I asked the captain about contractually having to be put downtown on a long layover, and he was response was basically you don't want anything to do with downtown DTW.

It's still a good idea to have bids in, because the company can waive the freezes any time it wants to, and doesn't have to let you know that its going to do it.

He is pretty much right. Other than the Casino's there is nothing to do in downtown unless there is a sporting event going on. The Greektown (area near the ballpark) area is the best area of downtown Detroit. It is fairly safe, but still plenty of grifters (like any big city) and it is loud on Friday and Saturday night if there is a ballgame.

Bill;
Overall, I agree with your analysis - except one part. IMO, you overrate the narrowbody left seat. Many/most int'l widebody FOs have been able to hold capt for a while.
The pilots who jump to the left seat at first opportunity are doing (what I call) an ego bid. The pilots who fly int'l long haul by choice look at pay/days worked.
The best it ever got with me was 8 days/month for 81 hours...I rode that for 2+ years. Contrast that with 12-17 days per month for 73 hours as a narrowbody A and you can see the difference. In all honesty, the 8 day month has largely dried up, 9-12 is now the norm, but it is still better than 12-17.
I am interested in seeing how this bid plays out too. Not necessarily with great anticipation, but more from a social engineering perspective. The A330 going to ATL, although not unexpected, is going to be interesting to watch mostly because that will be the Malaria jet.

I was primarily talking about those specific 67 A330 FOs in MSP. Those MSP Captains are all extremely senior, and can do anything they want or just call it quits if they don't want a new training cycle in ATL or a 747 training in MSP before Natco goes away. Faced with a paycut going to the ER in MSP, those FOs might now be able to hold 320 Capt in MSP and fly something very close to that 330. Some will follow that 330 to DTW and stay FO. I don't know how many want to make the longer commute to ATL. Since I live here in ATL, I want as much upward movement as possible.
Not always true. That is only if you are bidding into a position that is not open. If there is an open position you use your seniority.

Just wanted to chime in on this military issue. I am currently on military leave from Delta. I have flown on Delta often while on military orders. Last time I flew on Delta, I was returning from a trip to Afghanistan. We landed at Charleston AFB, took a bus to the civilian side of the airport, checked in 3 to 4 bags each. Got charged for the 4th bag, which was expected, flew home on an RJ, filled out a travel voucher, and got reimbursed for our travel expenses. Military members have government travel cards, so nothing has to be out of pocket. Delta takes good care of its military customers from a users perspective, and Delta is very military friendly from an employee perspective. I think its ironic and a tragedy that Delta has gotten bad press over how it treats servicemembers.
