Are out of base swaps going to be allowed? I sure as hell hope not.

Why not? I'm talking about the swap board, swap with pot.

I hope you're right: it's a terrible idea.

I think the MEC deferred it. One of our new reps is very, very "pro" already. I think I missed the poll.

Is this about our new procedure for handling grievances?

It's hard enough to get any good trips as it is... But you are senior now, so you forgot..

Out of base swaps have enormous potential for abuse and seniority violation.
In my opinion, that needs a full debate and membership ratification.
Sounds harmless, but it definitely has drawbacks.

You think "trip parking" is bad now? Just wait til you can do it across bases.

Because it doesn't benefit the people in the base, except for the people that have unusually difficult commutes. Because it allows for time to move out of a base based on personal connections, not seniority. Because it allows people to bid into a base that have no interest in any of the issues that are important to most others in the base, since they'll potentially nevr fly there. Because it turns the entire airline into a big category, which doesn't serve the pilots in general, etc.

This isn't strictly a commuter issue, either. Obviously the people that have a crashpad, or have a well established commute (think New England pilots coming to New York) don't benefit. The people based in the corners of the country don't benefit.

Pretty much, the only people that benefit are people in the center of the country, with a lousy commute to their existing base, maybe a commute that frequently turns into a two-leg event, have an interest. And again, since one can swap with friends, if they don't have good connections, they might be out of the loop.

This is the ultimate poaching device, and the only people that benefit are poachers, and more specifically poachers that work in groups.

The solution to the problem is to have good rotations, a good contract, and a good swap-with-the-pot system, where everyone gets access to time in seniority order.

Hmm, didn't think of that. I was just looking at the dearth of trips in the NYC and was looking at ATL. Many more guys looking to drop and swap there.
