Carl has a point - ALPA does point to all it's connections in Washington and ability to get stuff done there, but when the rubber meets the road, nothing happens. ALPA does get into the Congressman and Senator's office and speaks their mind, but it's not a strong voice and does a poor job of implementing change that is good for it's members.
PRIME example - I did a quick search of my email in-box, in the last month I have 4 emails/press releases from ALPA talking about Hand-held lasers and making it a federal crime. I think that's an issue that most of us honestly don't care about.
The last email I have from ALPA mentioning Crewpass was TWO MONTHS ago. I think almost ALL pilots would prefer efforts to be made on Crewpass rather than Lasers.

Keep in mind while we are all discussing Washington's barriers to the detrimental harm of going on strike at a major 121 carrier, our fellow TSA agents are looking at unionizing themselves.
TSA Union: Vote 'No' to Anti-Worker, Anti-Union Amendment -- WASHINGTON, Feb. 3, 2011 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ --
The working knowledge in Washington is that flight crews going on strike would be to detrimental to the carrier and the industry, so how would TSA agents going on strike be less harmful?
I know they are not talking about striking, but I wouldn't put it passed them.
Now our livelihoods are dependent on another wild-card variable way beyond the confines of our control, if any of this becomes reality.
Furthermore, keep in mind TSA agents would become the first group of federal security agents to unionize. The TSA really has become a joke of an agency.

Give the PAC some money so they can get the ball rolling on the age 67 rule, or completely support the MCL instead of the 1500 hour rule, or support the proposed FT/DT rules excpet for the Inhoff ammendment, or not do anything about screening for crewmembers, the list could go on and on.
I stopped giving to the PAC years ago have not seen a single reason to start donating again since I stopped. I would gladly send more money if I thought they would use it to protect my career and make our lives easier, but so far I've seen no reason at all to donate money to the PAC.

That is the PAC dilemma isn't it? Send us your money so we have a seat at the table. What we do with that seat is a big question mark.

That's the thing about negotiations under the RLA. The union doesn't get to decide when they've had enough, the National Mediation Board (NMB) decides. Unfortunately from what I've heard, the NMB got annoyed at APA and their shooting for the moon strategy, so they basically put them into "Timeout" and told them to figure what they really wanted before they talked to the company again.
The NMB board will let a union strike, theoretically, but (a) under Bush administration that wasn't going to happen and (b) the NMB has to believe both sides are presenting a reasonable offer and are actually trying to talk. It seems that they decided the APA wasn't acting in good faith.

It's not just the Bush Administration, it's any President. Clinton stopped the American strike immediately. There is no way President Neo is going to allow a strike that will impact the economy and his chances of re-election. That's true for any pres, regardless of party.
As for the ALPA PAC, I'll never contribute because they fund politicians that are anathematic to my beliefs and are detrimental to our country.

I gotta say that the "Touch & Gos" advertisement of ALPA National services, which I received this morning via email, did NOT give me any warm and fuzzy feelings about the prospects for our negotiations.

I'm not going to get into politics - I think that's against the TOS of this board.
I would wager that the current administration is pro-labor, you only have to look at all the help the FAs (and the IAM) are getting in trying to organize at Delta.

Man, I hope the DC9s keep sticking around. In the effort to take back markets from DCI nothing beats a 9 for offering more seats to a market saturated with full CRJs but not necessarily filling up a 88.
I see ATL-PHF was one of those. They've gone from 5-7 or more CRJ200s to a few CRJ700s, always full, to 1 88 flight a day in the summer to 1 year round to now 3-4 88 fights a day with sometimes 737s and DC9s. The way I see it there is enough demand in February to fill up 1 of those 88s and the others go out with 110-130 seats full in a 142 seat jet but sometimes as little as 50-90. Before someone decides to yank 88s out of the market I'd hope the 9 would be used before a CRJ900 is put back in.
All hail the 88 and 9.
