So he's either flying or on short call.
To add to what TOGA LK said about reserve, I've been commuting DTW-JFK for several years now, the last two on reserve. I have about 14 flights between LGA and JFK, to work with, and there are times in the evening where it is critical when a trip gets assigned. I do have ways to make it in if they call at 9pm, but it's a Planes, Trains and Automobiles scenario to make it for a 9am show.
Not that it's happened much, but it can, and I wouldn't want to risk my job. I think making to DTW on long call with 3 Pinnacle RJs a day is a serious gamble.
I'm working with 14 flights - mostly mainline flights where I can reserve the jumpseat on those mainline flights. I don't know if you flew for a commuter before Delta, but the RJs can fill up quickly, others have priority over you for the available seats (Pinnacle employees) and the jumpseat, and the 50 seat RJ can be weight restricted when an alternate is required (I think it's a landing weight restriction) or if it's hot. Also, it can be out of CG with a jumpseater too - often the RJ crews understand getting to work, so they'll put effort into planning their fuel load or a CG problem, but sometimes you're not getting on, even with empty seats/jumpseat.

Hope that's not true.
Delta has a long history of supporting military guys.
The only issue I've ever heard of them coming down on was guard and reservists who just happen to "drill" every Christmas or Super Bowl Sunday. There was a slight "kerfuffle" about that a few years ago.

Just curious ... anyone stay in the new Mexico City hotel? The reviews on TripAdvisor indicate it is exactly where we do not want to stay.
The Melia was not the best hotel in the system, but it was tolerable. Why did we change?
