The 717 rumor is befuddling on several fronts...

NWA took a long, hard look at the 717 when Richard was there (and Steenland too, who sits on the board). Also included in the grouping are an unknown number of senior managers in fleet planning, marketing, etc...who also were at NWA when they were kicking the tires of the 717. Obviously NWA passed on the 717.

The 717 would make a good replacement for the DC-9-50's that are due to leave beginning in three or four years. The 717 would also fill a gap below the 319/73G's in the fleet.

Regarding Southwest...Everything I've heard and read is Southwest has real plans to take on the 717 fleet, at least most of them initially.

If Southwest privately has no plans for the 717, you can be sure it's not going to get publicized at this point in time. You'd be talking about a merger with an airline (AirTran) where 3/5ths of its fleet and employees are going to get canned - that's not going to cut it in the public relations camp with the economy sucking. Imagine how that would sound right now.

Also, some folks staunchly believe that Southwest wants only ATL and the east coast routes. This could be done with FL's 73G fleet and some additional 73G's. And it's very possible the DOJ and DOT will require Southwest to divest of some space/flights at BWI and MCO and MDW where a combined WN/FL will dominate. Both of these scenarios would involve the 717's, some if not all, becoming available.
