George;
I too hope that we see the 748i here, and I do beleive that this is very possible.
Heck I even have an artist rendition of it in DAL colors I got from a Boeing buddy, but that does not mean that Skyteam may put the 748i at a carrier like AF and keep us doing point to point on smaller jets.

I agree Asia will be the future growth market...
The big deal is that Network has a big portfolio of jets to rightsize for each AC and Market, this is an unbelievable opportunity going forward that will give DAL a leg up on our stregthening domestic competitors.
This is nothing new though
LH and AF pioneered the diverse fleet concepts with both flying nearly every jet made by Boeing and Airbus with a few exceptions.
Leaving Cargo/Pax behind is a revenue opportunity lost.
Flying a jet with 30% empty seats or not fully loaded with cargo is not sustainable long term...
I wouldn't be surprised to see the 747-8i in Delta colors down the road
Cheers

I do find I have to laugh about our fleet. 5 years ago the company was putting out that Delta could not survive unless it got down to 3 fleets types. 73NG, 757/767 and 777's. I was at one roadshow where they said the airline had no chance of survival unless this happened fast and that is why they were dumping the 737-200 and 300's so quick.
Fast forward to a roadshow in June. Same group explaining how our diversified fleet gives us the advantage over other airlines. Management can spin things any way they want. Delta has a huge fleet renewal task ahead of them and it needs to start sooner rather then later. Capital costs will soar in the out years if they don't get some new metal soon. It wont matter to me but just like our lack of customer service the bottom half of the seniority list will pay for it. Delta has two critical needs. Improve customer service to at least average from terrible and start renewing the fleet. I fear management is to focused on the short term and not looking far enough into the out years.
As far as new 747's Delta was already offered a tremendous deal to be the launch customer for passenger version of the 747-800. We passed on the chance and Lufthansa stepped up to the plate. Its going to cost more now however is still not selling well!

Sailing, as you know both are qualified statements. The first was with the original DAL route structure and the second is with the diversified route structure we now have. Being bigger gives us the ability to be profitable while having a diverse fleet!

I agree with you 100% on improving customer service but until we back up our desire with action we still have a long way to go...
I'm glad the top guys are focusing on debt reduction and de-leveraging the DAL balance sheet. That is what will save this company long term.
You can fly the most efficient jet but if you're receipts are just servicing debt for the first 25 days of the month it won't matter at all.
There's simply no compelling new aircraft available today to replace any one of our aging types.
The 787-9 and A350 have promise but aren't available yet. I'm certain in time we will see either or both of them in the fleet
The 787-8 is a lost cause at this point as its difficult if not impossible to make a business case for the type at DAL...
As a combined carrier, DAL is large enough to have a diverse fleet and make it work.
Right now the MD90s are the best thing going because they offer comparable lift and burn of the 737-800 or A320 at a less than 1/4 the cost...
The interior renewal efforts, in particular the Panasonic/Weber Fusion seats for the 744, 7ER and MD90, are another one of those things that will have a big impact on the customer experience...
Cheers
