Adolphus,

I'll try to figure this out. Where are you located and who do you work for? This will help add to your post requirement for PM's. And I did try sending you a PM with no joy.

Can any of you DAL guys or gals tell me when the most junior CVG FO was hired? I know it would take awhile to get there.... I'd just like to know if it would be one year or five! Thanks.......

Default Interviewing 20 Aug

I'm new around these parts, but I'd like to help (and glean) as much as I can. I've got an interview on Mon 20 Aug and I will post everything I can to update what's been said here...

Like the new dog on the block I'll let you sniff my butt...

- 2800TT, 2700PIC
- F-18, F-5 (USMC); F-16 (USAF)
- US Forest Service (Baron, King Airs, DC-3)
- Currently USAFR-Hill AFB
- Put application in: May 07
- Got the call (email) to interview: 7/31/07
- Interviewing: 8/20/07
- Got hired: TBD
- Put in 9 LORs (2 DAL capts, 6 DAL FOs, 1 JetBlue capt (for long term personal reference...though JB may have been a black spot, JK). So copious LORs won't buy the interview.
- Had one of my Capt LOR guys call & email "ARNIE" Kraby (MGR Pilot Selection), and presto, the same day I got the email that they were reviewing my application. The next day I got the "we've found some irregularities in your app" email, and the "unexplained gaps" email. Went back online and converted my app from one big glob of mil time to each and every duty station. That seemed to work, and the "call us for an interview" email came later that day.
- Called the number for an interview and they offered me a 13 Aug date. I asked for the next one (extra prep time...the 13 Aug was the day after a drill weekend). I could've taken a date even later into September, but if hired, I'm butting against an annual trip to Cabo over T-Giving that I can't miss.
- Prep: bought $150 worth of books on Amazon (all the WFFF recommendations). I'm sure all were as overwhelmed as I was that I felt like I'd be taking the ATP written all over again. Talked to a guy that interviewed at the end of July and he said WFFF is still spot on for the technical portion. I'm going to Air Inc this Friday (17 Aug) for the interview prep, though most I've talked to said I'd be ready enough. I'd hate to not get the job offer and wonder "If I'd only have ..." So I'm dropping the 325 bones and using the weekend in ATL to get my bearings.
- Gouge: buddy that interviewed late July didn't get the call back. Arnie told him they liked him and wanted to call him back in 6 months. Apparently, he didn't pass the cognitive test. It's not a test you can study for and it can be a little confusing on what you're supposed to be doing at any one time. He was told by one of the pilot interviewers that he (the interviewer) didn't pass the cognitive test the first time and came back later with no problems. Anyone with any thoughts on the cognitive test?

I'm not an airline type of guy, not interested...until I went to Iraq as a FAC on the ground and came back to my civilian 9-5 (Forest Service) job and realized how much the cubicle (non-fire season) life sucks. The only airline I'd ever work for is Delta (uncle worked corporate for 30 years, mom/dad only fly, I've got 400,000 freq flyer miles, in-laws only fly, and most importantly, Delta is based outta SLC). There are a lot of bros in my unit with Delta and I now see the light on what it truly means to be home and not working for anyone (between trips and not on the USAF flight schedule). So here I am...

Anyone else going in on the 20 August interview?

Gretzky -

SLC should come pretty fast, I'm guessing some 07 hires will get it this bid. If the rumors of MD90's come true SLC could be the place to be.

The cog test can be prepared for. Any short term memory exercise is going to help you. Do the mind games that require associations to remember numbers and symbols.

I'm not sure how much they want to let the cat out of the bag, but simulations could be made of most of the tasks on the cog test. Talk to some folks and figure out your own methodology.

Part of the secret is knowing up front that nobody get 100% on the cog test. The test is to see how far you get and how well you do. So if you bone something up, don't worry about it, just focus on the task at hand.

I don't have a hire date, but the number is 5,944 which is about 1,000 from the bottom. That's deep into the pre-2001 gap. This next advance entitlement should give good trend information.

Staffing in CVG has been cut as a result of the hub realignment and RJ flying there. The folks that are hanging on to the base are senior. There is not any rumors of growth there - but - since the MD88 is the junior aircraft and there are rumors of more MD90's, whether or not more junior airplanes show up on the property could effect the outcome. Especially if the rumors of a trade for RJ's is true. CVG is the most likely source of RJ's to trade and that would have to be backfilled somehow.

Buckingbar...
Thanks. I was actually more worried about the technical test. I heard it was pretty close to word for word with WFFF, but the guys on this thread have heard they might change it (I'm sure that goes in with the mind games). The last couple interviews have sighted no change...

I'm a blabber mouth and can talk to anyone (read: BS), so that coupled with the Air Inc interview prep, I think I'll be ready (though a little stressed to do well and not tell about the time I was in an Arab prison...).

Anyone with words on the technical test? Reading Gleim's ATP written prep and the FAR/AIM's and Aero for NA and Checklist for Success and etal, has put me to sleep...and there's copious crap in there to get lost on.

BTW...
Most of our squadron DAL guys are SLC based. They said getting to SLC should take under a year...if anyone is interested (read: Lots of skiing).

Careful reading too much because the "copious crap" is not all correct. The test questions appeared to come straight from the ATP & (FE written for one or two questions) tests circa 2,000 or so. There is other gouge out there that is not correct and it can be confusing seeing good information, then bad information. They will try to sell you the "everything explained" book at AirInc. IMHO the rough rules of thumb found there are good, but might lead you to an incorrect answer on the test. Even some of the gouge answers are wrong. Consider the ATP answers the best available, but use the gouge to figure out what are the subjects covered on the test. Good luck.

In regards to rumors of the test changing - The intention as of now is to hire approx 75 a month from now til Dec and take Dec off for the holidays. Upon reconvening (sp?) after the holidays they are supposed to reassess numbers needed for '08, how the training pipline is going, interview process/testing. I strongly believe that if they choose to make a change it will be then (around Jan-Feb). But even then it will still probably be the same "type" of questions.

my 2 cents...

Gretsky,
Sounds like you've prepared yourself well. Be careful with the "canned" type of answers you may have learned through the interview prep. They have a way of seeing through the B.S. My advice is just be yourself, pause and think, and don't be afraid to ask to come back to something later if you don't have the answer. The interview is laid back and very professional. They're looking for personality, not B.S. IMHO. Good luck!
