Not picking on you Justdoinmyjob, just my two cents here. If we are worried about some ground personnel becoming desensitized to a flashing beacon, we should be more worried about a Captain who is going to be pressed to releasing the brakes (before it is safe to do so) once that door closes.

Can we just have a stupid switch that says "IN / OUT" on it?

It is a slight change but it will allow us to be on the clock and still blocked in to help with absolute time on parts, the three hour rule and many other time critical issue like the ones you have stated.

How about a e-mail to your new reps.
I want to be paid 30 minutes prior to schedule pushback and up to 10 minutes after arrival !!! I hate the fact that I'm up front pre-flighting the jet, doing walk arounds, and I'm not on the clock. Then, sometimes sitting there for hours on the jet, without food, without a break, with the doors closed, jetway pulled, beacon OFF ... because that's what in the FOM and our contract. DALPA ... YOUR POLICIES SUCK. DO YOU READ ME???? I'm not trying to be greedy, just pay me for when I'm performing duties related to flying. If perhaps I make a mistake during the pre-flight, and ends up in a jet being damaged or someone being hurt, can I claim that I'm not liable because I wasn't "working"? that my work didn't start until the beacon was on? I don't think so.

Turning a light on is a lot different than releasing the brakes when it's not safe to do so. Maybe because I've been here longer than you, but I don't think there's a single captain I've flown with that would do that.

The new category list is up for December to reflect the May AE. (Along with the new seniority numbers.)

I have a quick question. I'm scheduled to convert on Dec 1st, but scheduled to train in December. How can I convert by December 1st if my training won't start until December? Shouldn't I have a October or November training date?

If you hold the toe brakes, release the parking brake as soon as the cabin door closes, then reset it all the while holding the toe brakes, you are now on the clock with the brakes set and no safety issues. I'm just a first officer though so this is just my "theory." I don't know if this would actually work as I've never been able to try it.

Another not-so-obvious strategy is to do the "Before Start" PM flow after the doors are closed. I wouldn't know anything about this one either as I'm always on-time.

You are correct about the brake thing. It goes off the parking brake... a quick recycle while holding the brakes isn't noticable and "tada" you're on the clock.

Of course I never did that in my previous 4-stripe life ever.

newK doesn't have to do anything to block out. He winks at the hot gate agent and flexes his butt cheeks and everything happens.

The 3-hour rule doesn't apply to newK. Everyone knows he's always first in line for takeoff and has never be subject to a ground stop.

Excellent post. One thing to note, it is not only DALPA- Every airline that I know of pays similar to the way we are... with WN being a bit of an oddity but still basically the same.
