My experience is that airline revenue management can spot the coming trends quicker than economists can. Most of what you see is market panic spurred on by a 24 hours news cycle. Management started hiring because they see high revenue passengers coming back to fly (or at least that's what they say). Really, North Korea goes berserk about every 8 months, I am not sure that this one is much different. The problems in the Euro zone are more serious but seem solvable. Now, if we could just plug up that oil leak before it kills the Gulf, that would be nice.
RA saved me an heaping buttload of cash back in the 2001 at NWA. Months before 9/11, he came out and said that he saw a lot of weakness in the future, and started cost cutting and dialing back the airline.
Since I knew that the airline biz always leads a crash and lags a recovery, I took this as sign and immediately cashed out all of my stocks and moved everything into cash.
As a result, I survived the 9/11 market meltdown totally unscathed.
I owe him at least a beer at some point.

Does that mean it's looking good to get a seat in Business, or does it mean that those Coach overbooks are going to sit in Business while I sit in the terminal?

It means that there will more than likely be FF customers standing by for seat upgrades. Looks like the overbooking in coach are to the point that even DAL sees it as oversold.
I say go, put in for an upgrade and if you have to go on this flight, hope for the best.
They will generally upgrade tickets than can be upgraded to make sure the revenue gets on.

I disagree with you on this one. To equate non-member with a scab is a stretch. The only difference between a member and a non-member is one can't vote. They all have to pay the same amount of money. I'm sure that wasn't always the case but now it is.
The bottom line is this. Management aka the Company hires pilots, we don't; nor does DALPA. He's a good and fair guy and will do running the hiring. The more important question is why spend the time and money to spool up the hiring dept for only 300 or so guys and half of those are flows/recalls. Methinks the 300 is just the appetizer!

DALPA had non-members on the seniority list until we got Agency Shop in the fall of '91. This was a result of the Pan Am aquisition/purchase. The common reasons given by non-members for being such basically came down to being 1.) Cheap, or 2.) "I got screwed in the Northeast or Western merger." A few were against unions 'on principle.' After Agency Shop, all pilots paid their dues or a maintenance fee. If they chose NOT to pay, their job at DAL was at risk.
