They are trying to get us to do their job. Most of the underwing employees are minimum wage + and don't care. DAL is just a temporary source of cash and definitely not a potential career for those folks. Wake up hungover after a Holiday - just quit a get another minimum wage job. DAL used to use DAL employees for almost everything - now they outsource as much as they can (including flights) based on costs, and we get what we pay for. Outsourcing - unfortunately it is the new American way.

Where is DTW management and what in the hell are they doing? I used to think our JFK ops were the worst. Not any more.
saw the exact same thing saturday afternoon...once again, you have said it best. got the book order in. cheers

My usual reaction now is to think of that rapper on American Idol

DTW ground ops can be terrible, and if they're actually on it the you'll often end up waiting for a gate agent. The other day I saw a ramper leaning on a container that said 'CAUTION FLAMMABLE JET A'. Do you know what he was doing while he was leaning on said container?

SMOKING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Add to that most guys won't even check to make sure the ground power is good, they just plug and run. TERRIBLE!!!!!!!!!!
Mmmm, nope. Not a WB...at least not a "premium widebody". Plus I was on the DC-9 for six years, and have been in DTW for seven, so I am well aware of how DTW operates, even on the "junior varsity" side.

Quite honestly, I've never had the problems you guys seem to. Sure, I've waited my share for a park crew, but I have hardly EVER waited for a push crew.

Maybe it's my winning smile or fragrant body eminations (think lilac on a dewy morning or sometimes the smell of fresh cinnamon buns) that simply causes people to want to be part of my winning team...but don't hate the playa', hate the game...

On a layover in DTW and today I had to check my jepp plate to make sure we landed in DTW. We never stopped rolling from the runway to the gate. But just to be picky...took 5 minutes for ground power and never got air. Oh well..........

Nu,
I have always had decent experiences in DTW. If they do not hook up the air, I call, and it is there within five mins. Had an a/c in our gate that was dead, called up, had a new gate in a minute, and to add to that, the marshallers were there immediately.

I like DTW, great terminal and nice ppl. I just ask when I need something and that seems to work for me.

I had a "once in a career" in DTW...

It was one of those rare days when DTW was landing on the 27s (happens 3-4 times a year). Usually when this happens, despite whatever direction you come from, you get vectored 270 degrees around the north side of the airport to one of the 27 finals. It's usually good for at least 15-20 minutes.

Well, not this time...last flight of a 4 day. We were coming in from the SE. A slight vector put us on the 27L localizer. Metro tower gave us a "roll to the end approved". A slight right turn, and a chat with ramp control had us rolling gently to a stop right at A-5 with just a tap of the brakes, where the ground crew was waiting, power plug in hand. It was hardly a minute after we had touched down.

As I said, once in a career. Of course, I still had seven and a half hours to wait for my commute home, but hey, a win is a win.

That usually is my experience but it just might be the gate we're using on the Mighty 88. Seems to be the same gate every time but once you park it immediately becomes a ghost town.

Did you notice the whole in the wall there at the gate, that was me. The ramper parked us on the 90 line and not the 88, the Captain thought it was wrong but you kind of have to trust the ramper. Sure enough it was wrong so the other rampers were mad at the marshaller. They tried to hook up a tug but ended up putting the tug through the wall.

It could always be worse, the ramper might have been really signaling to another ramper where the bathroom was and we could've ended up like this CAL 80 in EWR a few years back:
