These 2 items alone seem to indicate that someone somewhere does not know what the heck is going on with respect to the future of this company. Another example, the company displaces 60-70 fos off the 744 in Jan and then in May put 20 capts on and 50 fos back on the aircraft. It sure seems that the tail is wagging the dog around here. Alot of displacement training cost and then cost to put guys back on the aircraft. I'm sure Pineapple loves all this money the company is throwing around, but then they will ask us for pay cuts when things get tough again. Who holds them accountable for bad business decisions they make and want us to pay for????? Just an observation, but it sure seems that DAL throws money around and is way more wasteful than fNWA. I am saying this because I am concerned about the health of this company. We are carrying around on average 7500-10000 pounds of fuel over what we used to land with on the old flight plan system. That adds up to alot of fuel burned to carry extra fuel. Nobody seems to care. We had a guy no show his trip to start this trip. Nobody seem to care that no one was there. They did not even know the other capt was not there. Had we not called at 1 hour before departure, we would have canceled the flight. I am just saying that this operation sure appears to be a ship with a lot of small leaks in the hull. The question is: are they fixing the leaks or are they going to get alot bigger and sink the ship? I think that as a company we have much bigger issues in front of us than what aircraft is being parked and what base is being opened or closed, and this aircraft should not be flying in this base. It's the typical worring about the **** ants while the elephant stomps on you. To me the operation needs to become lean, mean and efficient. I don't get that feeling now!
Alots changed since the last big ae. It had to be tough for mgmt to predict. Priorities have shifted again at our expense (training). The Pripyat helped lower costs in the longrun by replacing senior e pensive pilots with newhires and recalls as well as boost upward movement. Upward movement keeps pilots happy as well as slimming down total pilots during the downturn without furloughing keeps pilots happy.

I agree we're carrying extra fuel at destination and thus burning more mueller in the process. That should be getting tweaked moving forward.

I donīt know much about the other stuff but I do know you can never have too much fuel on board unless you are on fire.

As you seem to have broken the code on what the economy, the price of oil, and airline demand will be in 12 months, could you please give me a hint? My 401K could sure use the boost!

btw, WTI oil was $65.29/bbl and the DJIA closed at 8403 on 5/28/09, the date the PRIP was ratified. Delta's Revenue was down 23% in the June quarter of 2009, and corporate sales were off more than 45%. Oh, our stock price was $5.50, less than half the price today.

UAL furloughed 1450. AMR has over 1800 out. CAL 147. The DCI carriers furloughed nearly 1000 collectively. Delta didn't furlough. Many of the Prips left last fall. Delta isn't hiring until this fall.

Now all the airline trends are positive. And you want to carp about decisions made to mitigate the losses Delta was experiencing at the time while preserving jobs? I guess there's no pleasing some folks...

Well put slow... I think even I forgot a little how things were when these decisions were made. Looking back - they did a pretty good job riding out the wave when you look at it like that.

hindsight... funny thing isn't it?

It's really not hard to understand. When the PRIP was ratified capacity was down 20% & revenue was down big time. Ticket sales were next to non existent for international flying, & we didn't need as many pilots as we had. Now the economy is picking back up, we have an SOC & the ability to fully utilize our fleet to maximize revenue. An increase in NB block hours with a return of previous WB block hours requires bodies back on the Big jets. Since guys were kicked off the big jets to staff the little ones & are now needed back on the Big jets they're going back. Personally, these are the kinds of problems I like to see. Lots of WB vacancies & hiring. Really ZERO to complain about IMO.

Add it up across all of the flights every day, a lot of extra fuel burned just to carry, upload of revenue not happening. Keenster is just saying lets make the company "bullet proof" in efficiency, than we can insure we get some of the revenue. We need to move to the Next Gen flight planning.

Not really complaining. If you noticed, my title was food for thought. Being A FNG at DAL, was hoping that someone could explain away my concerns as some people have in making some good points. I have no idea how DAL runs things since we have only been operating under Phase 6 now for a month or so. A common theme you hear on our side of things in the 744 world is "boy they sure are ****ing a lot of money away" compared to what we have seen in the past. All of my concerns in my post were aimed at the company making the right decisions and becoming more efficient in order to become more profitable. I am amazed at some who always take everything that has a hint of questioning what mother DAL is doing as a slam to them and come to the defense of the situation no matter what the facts are or what the intent of the post was. Take the blinders off. I want this company to become the best there is for all of our sakes.

On this point, Keenster, we're in complete agreement. Throwing away money carrying "extra" fuel around isn't acceptable. I also want the company to become the best (to me meaning most profitable) there is for all our sakes. Wasting money isn't helping to do that.

Slow,
Buy FAZ(at your own risk) market is going down. That's for your 401k. Suggest www.jasmts.com. Excellent advice, have been with him since 1998 and have done really well. Send me a PM with your regular email and I will send a 21 day free trial. Don't take my advice, invest making your own decisions.

Other points well taken and not asking to be pleased, just want this company to do as well as it can. I see money being squandered and it may be that they are squandering the least amount possible, but it still needs to be looked at.

How do you explain crew schds not knowing a pilot no showed 30 min after his required check in which could have cause a cancelation of a flight with 375 pax on board?? What would that have cost???

What does it cost to carry 35,040,000 extra pounds of fuel around for a year on the 744 fleet alone operating as we do now????? That is what we are doing now as opposed to our old fuel loading. What is happening on the other fleets? We are talking millions here not peanuts. 330 guys what are you guys landing with now.??? I guess I am off base here, in that it cost to much to have a call in honest policy that would cost millions.

Sounds like the monthly APA process would work better so management could make changes monthly to aircraft, positions and bases instead of the 3 big AEs per year. They might not have to do such drastic cuts then drastic ramp ups as the world seems to change to quickly for the system in place now. Would that be better or worse?????

Just a few points and clarifications. I'm always for a good deal for the pilots, but I do want the company to do well also.

On the 88 fleet they have our arrival fuel down to around 4000lbs now. I even saw one the other day at 3900. That's getting a little to low for my comfort zone. Not sure what is going on with the North fleet, but we don't carry much extra on the -88. Do the North guys do single engine taxi's and shut the APU off yet? Probably save more gas doing that than running on fumes at your destination.
