You have valid points, but why then would AA be shelving MD-83s (former TWA were glass) and ordered over 140 NG 737s? With the economy on the fragile brink of recovery, oil already hovering near $90, the thought of anything narrow body powered by JT8D, yes the MD-90 is VM2500 (or whatever), is scary. If Douglas is the solution, why then to profitable airlines fly Boeing or Airbus? Why then did the A320/319 replace the 90 in SLC? Obviously more efficient, higher load and longer range. I'm sure the 90 has it's place, but up to what fuel price point. Certainly a dead goat at $100 a barrel or third world countries wouldn't be unloading them for Airbus orders themselves... There is something larger taking place here, it's not fDAL methodology.
Allegiant had no problems making money when oil was $140+ a barrel, & they only fly Douglas. UAL just parked 94 737's, CAL is ridding themselves of older 737's, and AA is loading themselves up with debt buying all those shiny new 737's. If the economy goes down again it's going to cost AA a TON more $$$ to fly those 737's around with empty seats then it will cost DAL to fly the Maddog with empty seats. Kinda simple math.

Delta is working hard to reduce our debt. Right now that's a big burden and its being addressed by buying new 777 outright and paying down the pension fund early...
On the 73N vs MD90 Cortelyou was saying it takes the first 25 days of the month to make just the P&I payments on the 73N. As a result the direct hourly operating costs are $1000+ over the MD90, and that's a no brainer.
Cheers
George

Paying down the debt from 17-10 billion will relieve us of about 1 billion a year in debt service. That is three 777's a year in saving.

I'm not ****ed at the MEC at all - I'm ****ed at YOU for your divisive back channel tactics.
I'm not even going to begin to debate the merits of the outstanding grievances here. That's up to the MEC proper. Regardless of merit, of which I'm not commenting either way, they deserve to be resolved by due process. If the shoe was on the other foot you would demand no less.

If I were you I wouldn't try to defend that grievance either, it is indefensible. It is a little hilarious, you ask me for my opinion on the grievance and then you are mad when I give it.
The due process is when a grievance is filed, CA then decides if it has merit. If it has merit then the grievance is pursued to a conclusion, either a settlement or a system board. The MEC can also step in and demand a grievance be pursued or abandoned also, that is their right. So the process is being followed, you just aren't getting the outcome you want.
I would easily encourage everyone to go ahead and just take it to a system board, but it puts many people in the position of lying on the stand or agreeing with the company's viewpoint. Those are people that work for "your friend" on the MEC and as a leader it is a rotten thing to do to put them in that position. It also makes the Delta pilots look like fools in front of an arbitrator. When we have a real grievance in the future then we will be remembered as fools and it will make it tougher for us to win. There is also the cost in dollars which is not small.
There are reasons why the process is the way it is. If we took every grievance filed to a system board we would spend our entire MEC budget on grievances. There is no point trying to prosecute a case that is unwinnable.
That is why I feel that a real leader who is a fNWA rep on the MEC should stand up and do the right thing. Explain to your fellow pilots that this was a mistake and it is time to let it go. You will take heat from a few idiots, but pilots are smart (except me of course) and they will understand the truth when you tell it to them.

I guess I'm a career first officer. Hard to believe I could spend 23 years at DAL and not sit left seat.
