When I hear the North guys get upset about not using "best practices", I always think "we'll decide what those are together when we're in the same cockpits together". Then again, it has never occured to me they may not be getting good training on our procedures. Considering the love for memos and CD's, and considering the fact Delta hasn't really trained anyone on anything in years (meaning the real, person-to-person, classroom insturction stuff), I guess I was pretty naive.

So maybe what we have here is a training problem. Before all Delta pilots can sit down and produce the better mouse-trap, maybe it would help if everyone actually was taught the same system. In the meantime, I guess it's no surprise the North guys are confused and want to go "home", where they're comfortable, and they know how to set flaps, thrust, and trim for takeoff...
Great Post! I remember (Summer 2001) when I came off the panel and went to the right seat - I had TWO WEEKS of ground school and CBTs with a live instructor before we went in the sim. Not ever going to happen again. We do need more help for the new guys (all our DALN brothers) since most of the procedures seem to be DALS.

Just a quick question for the guys doing international long hauls. What and how do you manage the paper work. DO you rip the fltplan off and seperate it or do you keep it all together. Just trying to figure out how you guys do it. When ours printed out this way(all together) we would rip it up into sections so it was more managable. Looking for suggestions but don't want to party foul on a line check. Also is it ok for fos to print the flt plan or is it supposed to be capt only. I like to get there early and get things done.

We break it right after the release (since you've got to turn that in), then right after the Loss of Nav Data to keep the actual FP together, again for weather and NOTAMS, then the track message, if any. We put the FP part (up to Los of Nav Data) on a clipboard, the rest often goes in those little plastic boxes on either side of the center pedestal. The FP and plotting charts go in the folder at the end of the flight.

One of the F/O's usually prints everything*, and grabs a plotting chart, the HI/LO weather charts ("printable maps", under "Delta Meteorology", below the 777 picture on the ECREW/DeltaNet sign-in. We throw in a hotel sheet, and we're done.

In ATL, they have printers in the briefing rooms, so it's pretty obvious. In JFK, the printing ceremony is how you find the rest of your crew and shake hands.

*Whoever is most eager does it. They're the one hovering around the printer, while trying to send some sort of body language signal that he/she is already taking care of it. Sometimes it's a subtle way of expressing a claim to the leg. Which makes no difference. Legs are attributed by currency, or often via a coin-toss. Some rat ba$stards don't put in their landings to get more legs, but they get found out. I had a real douche bag recently come out of training, with three fresh landings, who "felt a physical need" to fly. The Captain had loked up recency, gievn me the leg, but shrugged and gave it bag to the bag. That rarely happens quite that way (that someone that's fully current gets a leg based on a "craving", or that the Captain's spine drops out of his back, onto the floor).

Well I will admit this about cd training, I prefer it. Sure it's nice to have instructors and classrooms but there is a tremendous amount of wasted time. But it has limits and should be augmented by more aids that include real person tutorials.

This has hit on the crux of my frustration with current events. The NWA pilots were pretty divided coming out of bankruptcy. They initially sent 15 guys to be on their merger committee/alternates/monitoring, Delta had 3 plus a computer guy. There was a lot of mistrust within the ranks and so lots of people were needed to watch each other. Eventually, to unite the ranks a new villain is created, the Delta pilots and specifically Lee Moak. I am sure you remember the road shows, MEC communications, LEC communications and the like trying to paint the "South" guys as the evil borg out to steal your careers. Remember all the fuss about Letter 19 that turned out to be completely false? On the DAL side we had none of that.

We came out of bankruptcy quite united. It wasn't that we didn't have disagreements. You can't go through a possible contract rejection, termination of pension, distribution of $2 billion from bankruptcy proceeds, and the US Air hostile takeover without a lot of conflict. The difference was we kept the conflict internal and when it was over we moved on as a group. There was no need to whip up the troops for battle because we were already united.

In fact, you were correct that the JCBA carried a lot of risk for NWA pilots and virtually none for Delta pilots. Instead of trying to exploit that risk, the MEC and Lee Moak worked tirelessly to get the JCBA passed. It seems if the evil stories about them were true, they would have tried to torpedo the deal or at least stood on the sidelines. If they were really out to get the NWA pilots wouldn't that have been the ideal time?

So it is understandable that there is wariness from the North guys, but that wariness is not from a real threat but from a manufactured threat. My point in bringing up (clumsily I admit, and I am sorry for that) the contract improvements was not to play nanny-nanny foo-foo, but to say I have seen people get screwed by mergers, and it doesn't look like that.

It has been magnified by the flight ops changes that have nothing to do with the union. During an SLI it is obvious that there will be disagreements and those can harbor ill feelings. The SLI is over now so it is frustrating when those same divisive tactics are stirred up again and again. It is finally time to stop attacking each other and move on. There will always be internal conflict in the MEC, it is just the way pilots are. True leadership demands that you deal with that conflict internally and then move forward as a group. Anything else and you will get picked off like wounded ducks by management.

So it would be nice if we could have a period of a few months without leaked resignation letters, without fiery council emails, without forum attacks. Mr. TANSTAAFL seems like he is one of the North reps or at least his twin brother. He says that people are working on healing the rifts. I guess I will wait for results because I have seen the same movie over and over and I know the ending. It's time for a new show.

We separate NOTAMS and WX off leaving only the body of the flight plan on someones clip board. As a 7erA the FO's are usually the one's who print out the flight plan unless I get there first, in fact most are surprised if I print it out.
