Very true. I have been flying through CVG often over the last three years. The decline has been obvious, even before the merger was announced/became reality. The grand CVG RJ plan blew up. It can't sustain itself. Great airport, great people, just not part of the plan now. Especially in this economy.
Note that there were competing hubs for other airlines in Indianapolis, Columbus and Pittsburgh that have also gone away...

CVG blew up, but not because of RJ's. CVG blew up because P&G, GE, Proctor and Gamble, et. al. quit traveling or forced their business through Dayton, Columbus and Louisville. Corporate ticket sales were off up to 45% systemwide in June of last year, and CVG was even worse. Delta reduced fares by 38% to stimulate traffic, and traffic increased by 21%. Sounds like pilot investing.

The methods corporations use to book travel these days can borderline insane.
I have been told by a few traveler that they have to travel on the cheapest itinerary Priceline comes up with, even if it is stupid.
The point about the RJ's is simple. It is a last ditch effort that we have used time again. It takes lots of seats out of given markets in a effort to raise ticket prices. In the end it generally does not work.

If I remember, America West had a hub in Columbus... and ATA was big in Indy.. Who was in PIT... hmmm... PIT... oh right. US Airways!

ok so here is a question for ya? If you sit shortcall 24hrs(international) and put in a yellow slip when is the earliest they can work you after shortcall is over, on a yellow slip???

DTW-STL-TUL (on TWA) then TUL-DFW (on an ASA Brasilia). They said it took ALL day to get from DTW to DFW.
The crazy thing was that the pilots got paid half pay for deadheading, so this routing actually ended up costing more to the airline than the direct flight, when DH pay was included.

For international, not sure. I looked in Section 12 (Hours of Service) and didn't really see anything there. Since we can be on call all 24 hours of a 24 hour SC window, there might not be any requirement for rest after a SC. But I really don't know...

In any event, CVG was an experiment for DAL that failed unfortunately. When I fly through there now, I feel like I'm riding a horse into the old cowboy towns in the late 1800s. The gold rush came and went. We sunk a lot of money there and it didn't pan out. I feel for all of our employees that are now looking for other opportunities elsewhere.

I know quite a few biz travellers that will do everything in their power to avoid RJs...especially 50 seaters.

So why couldn't (can't) CVG compete with Dayton, Columbus and Louisville? Was it price or a matter of them siphoning off CVG pax? I'm sure there is not one soundbite answer to why a hub declines, but the big RJ expansion definitely seems to mark, if not the beginning, at least the acceleration stage of the death throes of a hub.
Slow - given the higher cost per seat mile and inferior service don't you think the RJs hurt more than they help? Don't get me wrong there is probably a sweet spot for RJs (maybe up to 2hr flights) but after that I think it is mostly negative.
Sure, the Griswalds buying on priceline have no idea what they are purchasing and go by the almighty $ - but I doubt the business traveler would fly on an RJ given the choice.
