Any "Latest & Greatest" about Delta?
Heyas J29,
Agree with you. One famous whale captain, who was hired and upgraded VERY young, flew to 60, then went back and roped.
When he finally retired, he died before the first retirement check came in the mail.
Another guy, built a whole, working 747 sim in his basement.
Don't get me wrong, I begrudge these guys nuttin', and I'll bet that a metioric rise from crop duster on the South Dakota plains to NWA pilot at 19, to whale captain at 28, and spending the next 32 years in the highest paying gig in avaition's golden years was a helluva ride.
But jeeze, some of these guys NEED a hobby, need to meet some new friends, need find a "lady friend" that works the unmentionables counter at Macy's or just need to let it go already.
I like airplanes, but I'll be god darned if I spend one day longer working for someone else than I have to....

Nu;
You sure about the last?
I agree though. If I go until I am 60 I will have 40 years in a 121 cockpit. I cannot imagine another 25 years.

All makes sense now....someone teach them about myspace and facebook and we can fix this problem
You say that now... I'll betcha that each and every one of us will sing a different tune when that decision actually looks us in the eye. that's why all that huff about guys leaving at 63 was a bunch of BS... and they knew it.

Didn't this guy brag about it too? I heard about him. Jumped to the back seat of the whale & died right after he retired. So nice to be able to enjoy that pension

We still have lots of guys leaving at 60. Some are leaving before that. Also, for us younger guys without a pension I think it'll be easier financially for us to leave because we aren't handcuffed to a pension. I'd like the chance to leave @ 55, which is why I'm aggressively investing now. I've got 30+ years left until the current mandatory retirement age.
Guys,
Here's my take on the over 60 guys. For some it's about the $$$. Some are soooo paranoid that their pensions will just disappear they'll probably work for the extra $1000 a month until they die.
But for most I don't think it's about the $$$. I think it's because they have NO life!!! They have no wife to come home to(or one they can't stand being around), and the thought of waking up the next day and not being 'CA Airline Superstar' scares them to death.

Each trip pays 28 hours; he does two of them for a 56 hour month. Not a full month, but he doesn't care. He's semi-retired. Who in their right mind would retire from that???
It's not that these very senior guys have no life, it's that they have a great life! I don't blame them a bit for sticking around. I plan to when I get to that point.
MLOA question
I have a question for DAL pilots about Military Leave of Absence (MLOA) and how our company assigns a line holder schedule around MLOA using PBS. Where in the PWA does it address MLOA? I have performed word searches and I can not find it.
First things first. I am a reservist and I don't abuse the system. I "always" put in MLOA before the schedules are run for the following month. I do not use my MLOA rights to drop a bad trip or schedule. And I think those that do abuse MLOA are scumbags and make the rest of us look bad and only cause a further divide between the military and civilian pilots. With that being said ... he's my beef. <br><rant>
As a line holder, I try to maximize my DAL schedule as best as I can without using the Maximum bid function of PBS. When I enter my MLOA the month before, PBS assigns time with those days. For example, I must take four days of MLOA next month. PBS pre-awarded me with 10:40 of time for those MLOA days. So, in essence, I get penalized by DAL for enterring my MLOA upfront and I lose 10:40 of time from line construction window.
Now, if I am able to be flexible with my MLOA, then I will not enter them beforehand. After I receive my schedule from DAL, I will then use the PCS function and request MLOA on the days I am not working. Therefore, I lose no flying time from DAL and I still get to take my MLOA.
I was curious if any of you (civilian or military) agree with me that it is wrong that I get penalized by DAL for taking MLOA?
Perhaps this was due to a protection written into the contact so that military pilots wouldn't have to meet a full line of time if they took MLOA? In other words, they end up with no days off ... or PBS assigns back to back trips butted up against a MLOA?
Recently I saw in the news where CAL pilots were suing CAL over similar practices reguarding military pilots and flying time as it technically is a violation of the Soldiers and Sailors Act of whatever year.
Any thoughts?

How do we move reserve days? I'm at the right page, but it won't take my input. It keeps saying "VIOLATES OFFDAY GROUPING REQUIREMENTS." I have two spots on my schedule where I have single days off due to unstacking. One day is the first of the month. This is bull. Now it won't let me try and swap.
I think I just figured it out. I have March 1 off by itself because it was the Feb bid period. I'm trying to get Mar 2 off so I have two days off in a row, but I think PCS only looks at March so it thinks I want a single day off. If I have this right, that kind of sucks.
