There's a great little museum at the old credit union building in Bloomington, right across from the airport. They have a nice little collection, and they have a videotape with some nice clips.

Minnesota Public Radio did a VERY nice review of NWA history:

MPR: Northwest Airlines -- a look back at its long history

Check out some of the resources to the right of the article. The audio commentary is pretty neat.

The Minnesota Historical Society has a collection that is full to the brim of NWA records, photos and recordings going back to 1917. I'm not sure what would be required to view some of these records, but anything newer than 25 years old is currently restricted.

Slowdown forces Delta Air Lines to cut capacity

Delta Air Lines on Friday said it plans to scale back capacity on its domestic and international routes because of the slowing economy.
The airline said it expects declines of 12 per cent in domestic capacity and nine per cent in international capacity.
"Demand has slowed over the course of the quarter," said Delta in a regulatory filing.
"As a result, we are evaluating our capacity plans for 2009 on both the domestic and international system and expect to reduce future capacity to better align supply with current levels of demand."
The Atlanta-based airline had just nine days earlier announced plans to add new routes next spring. The company declined to offer further details, saying it would release a fuller outlook in December.


Trimming over 10% overall is not something light!!!! What can we expect??? Voluntary furloughs followed by involuntary if not enough people take it? Or.....

The article got something wrong - I'm still looking for the SEC filing, but an article at the Atlanta Journal Constitution SEC filing: Delta may cut capacity - Atlanta Business Chronicle: said this:

Delta Air Lines Inc. told investors in a Securities and Exchange Commission filing on Friday its system capacity will be down 4 percent for the fourth quarter.
The Atlanta-based airline (NYSE: DAL) also said its domestic capacity will be down 12 percent, while international will show 9 percent growth.

Ok, I figured out what the Canadian Broadcasting (CBC) or whatever got wrong. The Nov 21st SEC 8K filing DAL - DELTA AIR LINES INC. (NEW) SEC Filings - Forbes.com says this:

December 2008 quarter vs.
December 2007 quarter 2
Consolidated RASM
Up 2 – 4%
System capacity
Down 4%
Domestic
Down 12%
International
Up 9%

So, they got two things wrong - when you compare Dec. 2007 vs Dec 2008, domestic CAPACITY is down, and international CAPACITY is up.

They also say this, but it has been posted on the Delta News Network:



Delta will provide more detailed guidance at its December 9th investor day, including Delta and Northwest pro forma comparisons. The company will also provide 2009 guidance at that time.

Revenue and Demand Commentary for December 2008 Quarter


As reflected in the above guidance, demand has slowed over the course of the quarter. Domestic advance bookings are running two points higher year over year, reflecting capacity reductions in the domestic system. International bookings are down 4-5 points.


As a result, we are evaluating our capacity plans for 2009 on both the domestic and international system and expect to reduce future capacity to better align supply with current levels of demand.

All in all, I'd think that cutting capacity doesn't automatically mean shrinking capacity. If we are cutting the flying schedule down on certain routes from 6 days a week to 3 days a week, while increasing international capacity to 3 days a week on new routes, the total change will not be as drastic as reported.
Not sure if I've assessed this accurately, not exactly a business major.

Before we get our panties up in a wad, I did not read where it said the domestic capacity cuts would come from. It could very well be that since more than half of all domestic flying is on the RJ, that's where the domestic cuts could come from. Let's wait and see what happens.

On a side note, the international capacity cuts could come from the widebodies being reconfigured for the new interiors - YouTube - most wanted airlines

I agree. I bet we cut RJ frequency and put a bigger jet on some routes. But, I've been wrong in the past.........

Business class for overseas DH, or at least over 13 hours duty (for us for a couple more months) will be a wonderful thing!
