A few days after the results of every award crew planning releases a summary for every fleet and position of what they anticipate for the next few months. Nothing really specific. Just enough for you to be able to plan.

So, Ferds post a few pages back is typical. A standing bid for what he wants, his current position, then the positions he woud want to fall back on if he were displaced.

If the higher preferenced position comes availiable and you are next in line to get it, it's yours.

There is also a Preference Up list that come out along with every bid. It contains all the names of the pilots who have a preference card in for every position. So you can see how far out you are from getting an award. For instance, there are a little over 150 pilots ahead of me to get 787 captain out of DTW.

That one is worthless information-wise, of course because the airplane isn't even built yet and 150 is quite a lot of people. When you get above 50, there is no real telling of when you get the position, because people tend to put their name in the hat when they see they are close.

So, as you see, it's a very simple system.

For any former NW guy,

If you get awarded a new position from your bid card, do you incur any type of training freeze? Under the DL system, you can incur any thing from 0 to 2yr freeze on your new equipment starting from date of the award. Thanks,

Denny

Hey Denny, Yes at NWA if you bid something on your card and you incur a training cycle of some sort we have a convoluted slide-rule of freezes (and I think these are going away with the joint contract) , The freezes varied from a year up to four years depending on how you offended the system and Douggie Steinland and his evil Mini-Me Tim Rainey. This system thankfully is drawing to a close.

Yes. Under the new JCBA, we will incur a training freeze. I believe it to be 2 years.

Denny,

It's left over from when widebody SOs made more money than any narrow body FO, but if you had a freeze to say 757FO and decided to bid your INITIAL captain slot, that freeze was just added to the captain freeze and you could go right away. It was designed to help SOs, who were trapped by the money, to bid narrowbody FO for a few months to get some skills back prior to trying a capt checkout.

Is there anything like that in the JPWA?

I kinda like the idea of a monthly bid card. Maybe later something can be accomplished as far as that goes.

Wow! Up to a 4 year freeze, that's a long time!

Carl, I just want to get this straight, prior to SOC, we will probably be using our separate bidding systems. So what you are saying is that it used to be up to 4 years but is a max of 2 now that we are one under the JCBA?

Thanks,

Denny

Yes, the change to a 2 year freeze from a 4 year freeze happened on DCC.

Under the JPWA all training freezes are 24 months. There is an exception for your first capt check out, with this you can break the 24 month freeze but you will take the remainder of the freeze to your new equipment.

So we can still break the freeze to initial capt? Good, I'll probably never use it but it alway provided alot of flexibility.

Denny, the 4 year freeze was one of those little easter eggs in the bandruptcy contract. No good turn goes unpunished.
