Looking at the size of the DAL AE this is why the NWA guys are so concerned over retirments. We do a monthly award and the one that was published today is for Mar 09 flying and it conatined almost almost 100 awards. This was also a small award for us because of the backlog we are having in the training department.
This AE should be called the AE that wasn't. Basically the company did not want to do the AE now. But it had to post the 777 stuff now or they would not be able to get guys in training in January.
Also, keep in mind the current economy, and the fact that we did not post any displacements - this is good news. I do agree that the "hype" about this bid now seems a little out of proportion, but all in all it could have been a lot worse.

Lobo,
That is a Voluntary Displacement not a Mandatory Displacement. When you bid a voluntary displacement you are saying "I'm volunteering to take the displacement of a pilot who is junior in my category (who is going to get mandatorily displaced) if I can go to the category I want (insert category here)."
You use the junior guys seniority to get into the category but once you are there, you exercise your own seniority. Clear as mud?!
Taking a voluntary displacement can avoid more mandatory ones.

There is still one thing I'm completely confused about. I'm getting conflicting information about displacements. I had one very senior pilot tell me that you won't get displaced unless they run a surplus on the A/E. Now you guys on here are saying that I can get displaced if many pilots senior to me bump me down. I'm at the bottom of the 73N in CVG. Even though there were no surplus 73N B positions on the A/E, I could still get displaced? Or would they just run fat on F.O.'s for a while? If you're a junior pilot, how in the heck do you ever plan your life if you're constantly getting displaced? I'd be afraid to move the family anywhere until I was pretty senior.
Remember the CVG stuff cancels out so this bid overall should create a modest amount of upward movement. No guarantees, always have your dispacement bids updated, but I would guess you are safe. I don't know the answer to "Can you legally be bumped without a surplus?" - usually you will not, but I was furloughed with a no furlough clause, so go figure. If you have some extra time post a question in the contract section of the DALPA webboard - you will get a quick expert answer.

Anybody having problems getting on the deltapilots.org site? No problems with alpa, id and password work, just wondering if there was something up.

This bid is closing a relatively large, relatively senior category. There are going to be lots of displacements. Most of them will be simple CVG767 to CVG7ER but definitely not all of them. There will be movement up and movement down throughout the system as a result.
As others have posted, a new international category opening is going to draw lots of bidders besides the CVG domestic guys. Plus some of those guys on CVG767 will have personal preferences to stay domestic. Some people just don't want to go anywhere near a 10 hour flight across 6 time zones.
The surpluses can and will ripple across all categories junior to CVG767A.
Anyone junior to that could potentially get displaced. It all depends on what people bid and how much backfilling and bumping the company decides to do. If you're in a category that's already short you are less likely to be bumped but that doesn't mean it can't happen. Especially if you're junior in your category.
All this discussion about the future intentions of Delta's marketing dept. and how crew skeds is going to man certain flights is interesting, but you can drive yourself nuts trying to anticipate that stuff.
Just bid what you want on the AE and VD screens and put in your preferences on the MD screen in case you get bumped.
Like Scoop said - Overall, this bid is numerically net positive. That hasn't always been the case.

So two questions from an outsider, as far as this AE goes.
What are the new chances of new hires on property in '09?
IF 76ER was such a sought after spot, why is it that so many new hires were awarded this slot out of training?
Thanks,
Jimmy

Jimmy,
The new hires go where ever the openings are. If AE bids don't cover all the advancement (as they did not in 2007) then new hires can get some pretty sweet opportunities. The ER has some 24 hour reserve which stinks if you commute to reserve. Some people want to stay closer to home. Who knows?
Friends that are on the ER say it is great. I'm sure it is better if you hold a line to cities you want to go to, but that's true about any airplane.
