We do pay about 28 million a year in dues. That would lead to quite a war chest.

To put the settlement in context, it's $44 million out of a $537 million distribution. I'm fairly certain ALPA was indemnified by UAUA in their contract, so it will be interesting to see how this settlement vice a verdict will be viewed by the court during the follow-on repayment squabble.
Thanks.. I feel soooo much better about it now.

Here's an idea. Decertify ALPA. Get Airtran to follow suit. Start the Atlanta Professional Pilots Association (APPA) with them, we both enter section 6 negotiations at the same time and hold ATL hostage. See what happens then. Just throwing stuff on the wall seeing what sticks.

Why do I see the makings of an AirTran "real men of genius" commercial here?

I would like to see a poll of what people think of dropping alpa and starting out own union. Basically, in numbers we should be able to run alpa on our own. I personally would rather have an in house union. I found somewhere that most of the alpa secretaries make more then 6 figures, total waste of money. The only thing that alpa has done has been their safty related work and give us something to complain about. I think it is time to start a grass roots campaign to oust alpa well before next contract. I am a lazy guy by nature, thus my choice in becoming a pilot, but I would put some time in to start our own union. Spread the word...

I'm surprised no one has broken the code. This lawsuit is just a continuation of the long standing efforts to rid this country of unions. Does anyone in their right mind really think, even if we did what Burn suggests, we would EVER, EVER, EVER be allowed to do any type of a work action? No way. When you have two very "labor friendly" members of an NMB and that NMB has told APA to essentially pound sand, and they should never expect to be released to strike, what makes you think another strike at a single major carrier (much less two who control an entire city the size of ATL) would ever occur?

Not a chance.

And because the piloting profession has been beaten down so badly, we turn on ourselves clawing and fighting for every last scrap. That's exactly what happened here. UAL gave the pilots a pot of money and let them fight over it. No surprise, a court could find something that it didn't like, and with a pot of money that large, the risk of loss was so large, ALPA had to settle.

What makes you think that would be any different with a stand alone union? There will always be pilots who think of themselves and will find a class action attorney to sue (at no cost to the pilot) so they can take something from their fellow pilots. Sadly, that's typical pilot behavior.

Not defending ALPA, but that is patently false.
