Bar, these questions aren't posed as flambait, but trying to understand your point of view. Were you here for any of Whitehurst's tenure? If so, what did you see him actually accomplish?

My impressions of him were very negative. The only concrete accomplishment I saw him make was Velvet Rope, and that's when he was COO of the airline. He was a great talker/schmoozer with a gift of telling people what they wanted to hear in the moment. That message was different for each group that he worked with (IFS, TechOps, Ops, etc.). He really stepped on it at the Paris Air Show. His executive allies included JK and GC, not the folks that I'd want as my letters of recommendation. Personally I think the Board made the correct choice.

Awesome post. You have a great outlook on life and, it seems to me, the keys to arriving sucessfully and sanely at the end of your career in this crazy industry.

-In 2010, Atlantic will be down 4-5%, Domestic up 1%, Latin up 9% and Pacific up 2%. (Only Latin made $ in 2009)
-LGA DOJ approval should happen anyday
-LGA growth will start in May, and remaing growth in June and July
-Applied for DTW-Sao Paulo
-Parking 50 RJ's this year
-If JAL goes through, 16 MD90s will more than likely be a part of the deal
-Flight Ops has proposed a GUM base, but has not been approved. If approved, award will be in the May/June AE.
-Most training for current AE will be done by June. Remaining training will be after summer.
-Currently fat on pilots, but we will barely have enough to get us through July peak in flying. No plans for hiring this year, maybe next year.
-Our plan is to grow by 5-6%, but oil could affect all plans. Business model has oil at $87. If it goes above that our LC competion hurst sooner than we do. We can recoup about 35% of the oil rise through fare increases.
-Not concerned about Air Tran in MKE. It means less flying out of ATL...good for us, and more flying siphoned from ORD/MDW....bad for UAL/AA.
-757-300 will be flying less to HNL and more hub to hub.
-DC-9 and 757-300 will be deployed in small doses to ATL

The last hour turned into a bit of a gripe session, but it was pretty tame.
My overall take was "we have a plan right now, but we are ready to adjust as the economy and oil change."
No hiring this year? What a let down! However, pretty much everything else is encouraging!

I think a lot depends on this JAL deal. I guess we will see slow steady long-term growth if the deal goes through. If it falls, we might see short-term agressive retaliatory growth...IMHO.

Something about retaliatory growth that I like. Kind of like being the rebound boyfriend, really no guy has the right to complain when that happens.

Well if we are barely staffed for july and we get growth via GUM and we get 16 MD-90s and the JAL deal, NO HIRING???? I guess it will be all done on Greenslips!!!!

Up,

I agree 100%. I am 31 and still love this job!!! I too, realize that the money may not be as good as it used to be but it is still a hell of a job. I came from ASA two years ago, so right now I am still in the AWE phase of working for a real airline!!!

Hook em Horns!!

I agree as well. Getting displaced and could care less. It is part of the biz. I knew it was going to happen when I bid it, and will have fun doing the International until I get kicked off. When I do, I will enjoy the next jet.

I have thoroughly enjoyed each seat I have sat in here at Delta. I am sure that will continue.

Agreed, and a lot will be decided in the coming weeks and months. This whole new hire and growth deal is a moving target. It will happen, but until it does at least we are not talking about furloughing

I like Anderson as well, although I would never confuse his interests as being the same as our (the pilots) interests.

Remember:
  • During the 2007 search for a new DAL CEO, Anderson repeatedly stated publicly that he was NOT a candidate for the job.
  • After he somehow got the job he wasn't a candidate for, his famous quote was "Between Northwest and Delta there is no plan and no intention of any merger or acquisition". He almost immediately then went shopping for a merger or acquisition.
He certainly doesn't owe it to me or the pilot group to tip his hand, and there are legitimate business reasons for misinformation campaigns. His duty is to the shareholders first, his personal enrichment second (or was that the other way around?), and the employees of the company as a distant third.

Ultimately, if he does well for the company, ideally we'll all benefit from it. But lets be realistic about what he's here for.

(a good summary of his Delta dealings are summarized here: Delta Chief's Fancy Footwork - WSJ.com)
