Any "Latest & Greatest" about Delta?
The snow never quite makes it to the airport.
But this is a bad omen for March, when we always get a nasty ice storm after a season like this.
ACL65 - sure is a lot of talk about 737 flying, but no pilots on the airplane to do rumored flying. So why they kicking such a large pilot of pilots off the thing (by not filling ER slots BTW) ? As is always the case, they are out of reserves in ATL this weekend again. Figured since you were close to the action, you might have a read on this situation.

I wonder if the reason that DAL never ordered or took delivery more more 73N's was because they were looking to grab an airline that had plenty for their plans.
Well, either that or now to keep one step ahead of Southwest's sudden BFOTO to use VNAV (gasp) we are now using pilot-less drone 737's on all but the really crappy trips to South America. That's the only thing that makes sense based on what appears to be senseless displacements from Crew Resources.

I think it is a bit early to be ecstatic about the deal.... Spending 1 Billion dollars in cash and commitments for a bankrupt airline does not help our (pilots) case going forward to Contract 2012. With JFK Capitol improvements (terminal), the commitment (now?) to JAL, and the corporate debt the DAL has to either pay back or refinance in the next 3 years, a play for Alaska with surly lead the company to plead poverty at contract time.
Until the DAL MEC conveys to ALL of us what the plan is, I am cautious about what to expect. Narita is no Frankfurt. The 5th freedom rights allowed NWA to be the 3rd largest "Japanese" carrier in Japan after JAL and ANA. This "good corporate deal" might not be so good for pilots.
Delta was the second largest carrier in Frankfurt until Open Skies, serving that city from 9 different US locations with 15-17 beyond markets and 13 FRA based aircraft (767-200 and 727). Open Skies and the fragmentation brought on by hub busting point to point aircraft like the 767-300ER (for NRT the 787) killed the yield of the operation there. It was pretty hard to compete with Lufthansa once they had the UAL feed and a whole bunch more destinations and frequencies than Delta could offer. While any deal will stand or fall on its own merits, not having a corporate deal might not be so good for pilots.
Looks like we will have an answer by the 16th...

JAL hints deal done with Delta

Japan Airlines is poised to strike a tie-up with Delta Airlines within just days, which would save the company from bankruptcy and change the shape of global airline alliances.
According to reports emerging in the Japanese media, JAL has already made the decision to strike a partnership with Delta, despite a competing offer from its oneworld alliance partner American Airlines.
Speculation was fuelled over the weekend by an interview with Haruka Nishimatsu, JAL’s chief executive, in which he said that Delta had more Asian-focused partners in its alliance and that Asia represented some of JAL’s best prospects for growth.
The airline is expected to make a decision by 16 January as it grapples desperately to head off bankruptcy. The company made a loss of Y63 billion (£420 million) in the last financial year and owes its biggest creditors more than Y500 billion.
Delta has offered $1.02 billion for JAL, which is Asia’s largest airline. The move would be a major scalp for the U.S. airline and hugely strengthen the Skyteam alliance.
AA has raised $1.1 billion in funding through TPG, the private equity firm. A spokesperson for the airline said it was still talking to JAL and that it had heard nothing to suggest JAL had already made its decision.
BA has also put pressure on JAL to stay in the oneworld alliance, and its finance director flew to Tokyo at the end of last year to lend the airline’s support to the AA deal.
According to the Times, certain factions within the Japanese Government are understood to favour the Delta deal, viewing it as a “white knight” option. One source who said that the negotiations have now intensified, with both sides possibly preparing to raise the size of their funding offers.
JAL shares soared 31 per cent yesterday as a market reaction to the weekend announcement of a new Y200 billion credit line from the Development Bank of Japan.
However, analysts said that JAL’s troubles are far from over. Even with the extra credit line and the prospect of financial support from either Delta or American, it faces what is likely to be a very painful restructuring. One plan would include JAL cutting 9,000 jobs and 45 global and domestic routes.

Well mine just did. Ferd, I asked one of the girls (Anna) if she knew you but, alas she said no. Must have been a long time since you were at Godfathers. Of course, she's only been there 6 months. Either that or you have them well trained.
Happy hour was great. So good we didn't make it Johnny's.
My better half is p***ed you let me know about APC in HNL. Spent too much time here lurking.

Anna is a nice lady, should a'said the tall bald guy that laughs at Bob's (? guy who runs Bobby Cadillac's) jokes. I didn't go there much this year as I moved and did domestic. The last two trips out, I got mostly stuck on the "late shift", ie get in after they closed and departed next afternoon. Some day, I'm going to walk into RA's office and DEMAND we get our good Saipan's back If nothing else, I need to go out to the island and snorkle......we can just sleep anywhere.
Yeah, at night I do my APC sitting in my chair in front of the TV. At least I'm in the same room and she isn't as grumpy......

Just heard from a buddy of mine at ASA, and apparently they are signing a deal with a Vietnam airline to provide regional feed for them for a 5 year term. About 50 90seat RJs worth. 3 month, 6 month and 1 year terms for the pilot who go there. This came from the presidents mouth at ASA. Pretty crazy!!!!
Insurance policy. Many of us also didn't believe that an arbitrator would blindside us with a 25-35% paycut 5 years ago either.
Since that time some, many have been looking over their shoulder for unexpected news and take necessary steps in advance to avoid another disaster. Though there's not much we as a group could do to scuttle a merger deal we can prepare should the board and stakeholders decide to sell. Collectively we'd hate to be caught surprised again, especially if there is something we could do in advance to affect the outcome.
