I think the captain pays then has the right to act annoyed at the Cat Ranchers for the rest of the trip. Buy him a cup off coffee tomorrow and he'll be fine. Maybe have a pow wow with the coolest of the cat ranchers to find out what happened and who shorted and shame them to somehow repaying the captain.

You feel bad in this situation because they'll work it out so that there is no tip. Ironic in a profession where 98% of all the talk is about how ungrateful and rude customers are.

Of course, you could always pull the "I gotta go to the bathroom" trick and get the heck out of dodge and watch the Cat Ranchers pay the entire bill, then reimburse your share the next day at duty in. Claim you had the "tummy grumblies." Of course they would be drawing comparisons between you and their ex-husbands for the rest of the rotation.

Here here Bar. Unbelievable irony.

The short answer is to never ever go out with the cat ranchers...ever.

The blind expectation that we should pay for them is unsat.

Tell them to call their grandkids and have them wire some money, or they are gonna be washing dishes if they wanna see Mittens, Cuddles, Fluffy, Snuffles, Bill, and their 21 other companions again. (in reality...youre gonna be eating it-and they are also going to be eating.... your crew meal)

Can't answer for Clamp, but we had this happen over Thanksgiving at an expensive buffet at the hotel. The ranchers shorted the total bill by about $25. The Captain looked at them and said, "both of us have paid our part of the bill and thrown in 20% for a tip, the rest is up to you and they better get at least 15% tip." Got a few dirty looks, knew we wouldn't get offered much on the way home, but didn't have to foot their drink bill and tips.

Obviously Clamp will have a better solution to this dilemma but here is a trick that I know works very well: When the bill arrives grab it and tell them to split the cost of the food (give them the total cost divided by the number of Cat ranchers) and that you will buy the drinks due to the good company you had. They will jump on splitting the cost of ALL food and you're left with the drinks only. The Captain will feel bad not to help with the bill and pay for the drinks - wolla - you're home free and looked upon as a hero from all. The next morning, go and buy coffee for the crew and now you're a hero again. Cost of the trip; $20,-, treatment from your Cat Ranchers; priceless.

Just my $ 0.02...
