Any "Latest & Greatest" about Delta?
Two articles just came across the wire. One says we get JAL the other says not so fast.

News for 'DAL' - (DJ JAL Decides On Capital Tie-Up With Delta - Report)
TOKYO (Dow Jones)--Japan Airlines Corp. (9205.TO) and the state-backed Enterprise Turnaround Initiative Corporation of Japan Monday decided to pick Delta Air Lines Inc. (DAL) as a capital alliance partner for the struggling airline, the Yomiuri Shimbun reported in its Monday evening edition.
Without citing where it obtained the information, the paper said the airline will join the SkyTeam Alliance and is now working to terminate tie-up negotiations with AMR Corp.'s (AMR) American Airlines.
A tie-up with Delta will likely help JAL in its revival efforts, the paper said. While Delta's market share of trans-Pacific routes linking Japan and North America stands at 32%, that of American Airlines amounts to 8%. A tie-up with Delta will enable JAL, whose market share in these routes stands at 22%, to slash its own services and boost code sharing services with Delta, the paper added.

News for 'DAL' - (DJ Japan Airlines: Still In Talks With Delta, American)
TOKYO (Dow Jones)--Japan Airlines Corp. (9205.TO) said Monday it is still in talks with Delta Air Lines Inc. (DAL) and AMR Corp.'s (AMR) American Airlines on potential tie-ups, and that it hasn't decided which to partner.
The comment was in response to a report in the Yomiuri Shimbun's Monday evening edition that JAL and quasi-government investment fund Enterprise Turnaround Initiative Corporation of Japan the same day chose Delta Air Lines as a capital alliance partner for the struggling airline.
That report followed an article Sunday in the Asahi Shimbun saying the Japanese carrier was in favor of partnering Delta.
A JAL spokesman denied these reports, saying the company is continuing discussions with both parties.

If the first article is true, and we "boost code sharing services" with JAL, does anyone think we won't need to keep the -400's or get a lot more 777's?
Second is a distraction. Previous articles are programmed leaks to guage investor reactions. Reaction was JAL shares were up 32% this morning in response to DAL and Gov bailout news. My money, if I had any, would be on Sayonara American
I wonder how far we can go here, DAL gets JAL and puts in for anti-trust and then DAL goes for AS and merges with another airline within one year of merging with NWA... to me AMR is going to have to come out swinging...
Fact is there is very little overlap on AS. The anti-trust flag kind of fly's in the face of all the "Consolidation, reduce capacity" siren songs of various CEO's over the last several years (including Parker who was one of the loudest, but now objects to the concentration of DAL in NYC)
I guess consolidation is good as long as it's you and not the other guy.....
Super,
You won't lose any numbers or relative seniority unless of course your expectation is to staple. Although a merger could add 1,500 pilots to the seniority list a merger will also include 100+ airplanes, block hours and new routes. In other words, staff neutral. Your opportunity with Delta, in the end, will remain the same.
Consolidation is a different issue. Nobody wins if that happens.
BTW, it might come as a surprise to learn that most if not all at Alaska are happy flying the equipment and domestic routes they do. WB and long-haul international would be of no interest. As a result, Life-long fences would be expected...and fair.

Cog
An offended former fighter pilot!
The article says JAL would slash its own services to code-share on DL. But Im wondering how that would play out long term. When JAL returns to financial health, would it really allow most of its Japan-US flights to simply be flown on DL instead of its own metal?
They'll get the money regardless so they (mgmt) probably wouldnt care if DAL was doing the flying. By codesharing JAL can get the results without all the investment that comes with using its own aircraft. Its going to be interesting to see how this plays out.
