So what’s the big deal of having booze in your flight bag? I thought there was a liquid exemption for crew in uniform. Can we bring wine/liquor/beer with us to/from a layover? I always thought that was ok.

I’ve had a random and had some Captain Morgan in there to help forget about a 30 hour layover to Nowheresville. TSA didn’t seem to care.

There is of course nothing against having booze with us (just brought a nice bottle of red home from CDG), it's more of the don't show up to the checkpoint having consumed AND having booze with you. I don't think the bottle would've made any difference - especially being unopened - had circumstances been different and he went through and then got caught.
Still hope he gets the help he needs and gets on a good path.
