Default WS in good reserve coverage

I am fairly new here, bouncing between reserve and line. I get not picking up extra flying when manning is tight to help negotiations, but if there is good reserve coverage, doesn't it help the pilots as a group if line holders WS? Then they get extra $ (admittedly with qol trade)and the reserve gets to stay home and get paid same amount. If the lineholders don't WS, the reserve goes to work at no extra pay. GS is not a player in this case because the reserve coverage is there.

I get it that the company might adjust their expected extra flying figures and hire less for a while (maybe), but if we only do this when there is good coverage it should self correct. I am ATL 7ERB, just thinking out loud. Let me know what I'm missing.

There is never good coverage and with ALVs at 84 and lines that can be built to 91:30, not many day left to fly especially at WS wage. Not a big fan of the pick-up WS because of the chance you may have gotten a GS that you will never know.

Now if they built you a line of 65hours, enjoy your time off or pick up that WS to make up the difference.

WS with good coverage ok.
Last-minute WS with no one on short call, not so much.

What if I dropped a crappy trip and was at 60 hrs credit and needed that WS to get up to the GS trigger? Would it be ok then? Could think of a myriad of reasons (surgery, college tuition, etc) someone might need to WS. They probably already have a GS for the month and won't be getting another one.

Good point scambo. Anything allowed per the contract is permissible.

That's exactly what I am doing. I always have a blanket GS in and am in a category that has more then enough opportunity through the month.

My question had nothing to do with being upset about not getting a GS. I was solely questioning how the award process worked.

I'll be at the beach and pool all weekend if you need me. Happy 4th!

I've found I get a lot more rest and relaxation if I don't even put in for a GS or a WS. I almost never open iCrew on my days off unless it's to book a JS to work. The less I think about work on my off time, the more I enjoy my off time.

I've flown with guys who show up all pizzed off that, "Hey, did you see Joe Blow got a GS to Joburg tonight?? W. T. F! I'm senior to him and I wanted that but it wasn't there yesterday so I picked this up instead and then he got it and and and....". and the guy is PO'd for the entire trip.

Wow. What a way to live on your days off, tied to the open time board, waiting for the phone to ring. I just don't get it.

Enjoy your July 4th guys, you only live once, have fun while you can, you can pick up more flying after the next TA is signed.

So are you saying someone very junior in a category should not put in a WS for a short notice trip because a senior pilot in category may get a GS?
