A few Google searches about HIPAA and employer verification mechanisms demonstrate the law allows for them, and your doctor should know how to handle them. There are enough valid contractual problems to debate and improve, this HIPAA paranoia seems like wasted effort to me...let DALPA concentrate efforts elsewhere.
Furthermore, we have an arbitrary dispensation of decisions on individual sick occurrence verifications on a regular basis coming out of the fourth floor. There has even been questioning from that entity on the timing and need of various medical procedures and when they are scheduled by the patient/pilot.
Big IF: If it is a true fact that third party verification is being negotiated to handle the administering and verification of sick time, that is a giant Pandora's box that just was opened in regards to medical records, the sharing of such records, and HIPAA.
Anyone with knowledge, please contribute how sick leave verification is used at other airlines.

Doesn't have anything to do with whether you have a CBA Or not. Employers have an exemption from the HIPPA law. Here's the excerpt:
"The Privacy Rule does not prevent your supervisor, human resources worker or others from asking you for a doctor’s note or other information about your health if your employer needs the information to administer sick leave, workers’ compensation, wellness programs, or health insurance. "

Small point of clarification. (Yes, I know you know this too.)
A person's employer can ask their EMPLOYEE for a "Doctor's note or other information". They CAN NOT ask the hospital or go 'VFR Direct' to the Doctor without the employee's consent.

P.S. I'm fairly certain our CBA does not waive an employee's requirement to authorize consent for HIPPA.
Not to distract from the contract politics..but I'm headed out to BOS next week for my bud's retirement from the CG after 27 years, and our classmate who just made Flag is presiding over the festivities. I'd like to bring each of them some High West Whiskey from Park City, but I plan on riding the JS (at the Captain's discretion, hopefully), and I can't find where a couple bottles would be prohibited in my bag riding the JS like they would be as a carry-on in coach.
Anybody have the gouge? Thanks in advance..CG
