West of DTW, and looking at bus service, and buying a block of four to eight houses. Just ideas from an idle mind. It will be a decent place to call your base!
In light of our extensive operations over the North Atlantic:
The pool will be kept at 35 degrees fahrenheit. Just to make a "point".
at my first airline that flew to europe we did not even get in a pool. the instructor said "there has never been a successful ditching in the north atlantic, and you ain't gonna be the first!"

Avoid these neighborhoods if at all possible.... (although the houses are cheap)

On the bright side, I know a guy up there who installs security systems, and I'm sure you could find someone willing to build you a biga$$ed fence....
In all seriousness, there are lots of nice affordable areas that would be great for exactly what you have in mind. However, I would forget the idea of bus service right off the bat. Don't even fool with public transportation in the Detroit area. It's awful.
