I don't like to highlight the numbers, but I'm usually the last guy to touch the paper. The reason I don't like to highlight is, once someone has done that, (usually the first guy to touch it) the next guy who looks at the paper will only look at the highlighted part. I'd rather all 4 of us independently check all the numbers and then decide which numbers we are going to use, then we talk about it.
On the 777 we have lots of 'gotcha' stuff, like is it: APU to Packs, Thrust Bump, flaps 5 or 15, wet or dry, and more, so I look at the gross wt., winds, runway condition, and pad, before I decide which 'reduced' power setting I want to use, and I like a 10,000lb pad, because I've seen too many rampers make 10,000 mistakes on their math.
Then I want all 4 of us to agree on it, before we load it.

Good points Timbo... There are LOTS of gotchas with the WDR and I have seen too many in recent past.
The reason I "highlight" is to let them know what I am thinking (usually it is limited), I can see your logic in "drawing them in" but hopefully they can look at the real data stuff!!
Oh well... wish you could have visited the 4 engine whale. Maybe after the merger with Virgin, we can get them back!!

Hahaha, yeah, sad but true on the VA thing.
On the takeoff numbers, if I'm the first one to handle it, I'll look it over mentally picking my numbers then hand it to the other guy(s) and say, "What do you think?". I've had many times where the other guys saw something I missed, and pointed it out to me. Thank God for good F/O's, even if they are always trying to push me down the escalator!

Pushback is the one time the airplane is moving but you are NOT in direct control of it. You can't even hit the brakes, you might break something expensive. Might as well put the data into the box, since you are along for the ride anyway.
BUT, I always have the F/O do it, since I'm the one talking to the tug driver and I like to keep my eyes outside, just to see what's going on. But he can't be doing that AND starting an engine at the same time, so do one or the other, but not both at the same time.
We do get paid by the minute, what's the hurry? If you rush, you will make mistakes and/or miss something... at least that's what I tell my wife when she wants me to mow the lawn.

Once during pushback in FLL from one of the deep inside gates, I started getting this really strange feeling, like the hair on the back of your neck standing up feeling. I noticed we were deviating away from the yellow line, so I looked at the wing walker on my side who was frantically signalling for an emergency stop. The tug driver, either couldn't see him, or wasn't looking. we were flashing the taxi lights, ground call, and yelling of the interphone to stop. When we got things under control and explained to him what almost happened, he just laughed. our wing tip came within a foot or two of the other planes stab. had we both been heads down, we would have gone back to the hotel to fill out ASAP reports...

I love these comments on putting the numbers in by the widebody guys. You do what 8 a month maybe? Plus you have 3-4 people looking and verifying the AWABS? I just find it funny, not that anything you said was wrong.

GermFalcon robot is made to sanitize airliners
What a great invention. I hope Delta buys some of these.

Toss the reserve component in there where numerous guys only have their quarterly sim bounces. You have to be methodical and inclusive or you risk those guys being out of the loop.
Also, we used to have a saying, you have to get comfortable being uncomfortable (with your (lack of) proficiency). By that we didn't mean guys weren't capable or proficient, but all of us have done the multi leg domestic stuff and up down up down repeat. In that environment, you don't have to think about what you're doing at all. That changes massively on the long haul jets.
Every one of us gets where you're coming from. And you're right.
Anyway - we get paid by the minute. I just finished an ASAP for not taking our time and confirming our taxi route today. Nothing big happened, more CYA but illuminating to reflect on how we got to that point.
Talk to you in a couple of months.
Denny
