To ACL:

You won't be debt free when you get displaced to Detroit and have to buy a new house!

To New K:

A DB plan does just the opposite of what you want. It forces people to retire on someone else's timeline. A good DC plan is what will allow folks to retire early. You're right it doesn't help the Deadzoners now. But in the long run it provides today's junior pilots the opportunity to leave the job on their own terms well ahead of any DB pension. That is until the government seizes all 401ks.

We should immediately raise the pay of the years 1-5. That would be the biggest wealth building move a union could do for its members. The value of an extra dollar in year one is exponentially higher than the value of that dollar in year 20.

If the company ever offers a return to the DB for something, you can bet that Ch 11 is just around the corner.

Not true, in arbitration, FDX and UPS were often compared to the pax carriers.

Landing fees are a fixed price
Oil is a fixed price (unless your hedging people screw up)

Its about time for PILOTS to become an increasing/fixed price.

I feel like Joe Pesci at a drive in. I've been in NY for a week on reserve at the top of the bucket with nary a trip. The day before I plan to go home I get called for a double all nighter to SFO. I guess it cold be worse. I get back to NY at 0700 on my last day.

Here is another question: Is it better to start out less restrictive and work to more restrictive or vice versa? Example:

1. Prefer off Dec. 25,24,26
2. Prefer off Dec 25,24,26,27
3. Prefer off Dec. 25,24,26,27,23

I'm thinking having a bid like this that eventually encompasses all the days off that I want is the way for me to go.

Denny
I think that you are confusing award/avoid logic with prefer off logic. Prefer off days are the only thing that have left to right priority.

Are you bidding for reserve or a line (pairings)?

If bidding for a line of pairings: Your bid above is going to read line one and take any trip that touches those days out of the pool (not to be assigned to you), then it will read line 2 and remove the trips that work on the 27th from the pool (it will also try and remove trips on the 25, 24 & 26 but those have already been removed). It will then read line three and just as above, remove trips that work on the 23rd.

Now, if you go into denial, after it has removed the lower negative preferences (avoids), it will get up to line 3, remove 23rd from the line (add those trips into your pool), wipe your schedule clean and rerun the bid from line 1. If still not a legal line, it will then add in the trips that operate on the 27, wipe your schedule clean and rerun from line 1....then, if it must, add in the trips that touch the 26...and so on for each day listed in line 3.

Nah, here in DTW you can trade in your car and get a house. Plus you'd get cash back! I saw two houses today just west of DTW for $10K and $15K. Of course, they aren't far enough west to be the nice areas, but who's counting!

Very well written and explained. I've been a heavy user in the past of ELSE START NEXT as I wanted a certain combo and if not that first combo then I want a different one. I actually probably used it too much according to the PBS folks I talked to but I still like the safety of it. But this month I'm going a little simpler and less picky and just sticking to 2 bids, one line and one reserve and I'm going to let denial mode do its thing... which is butcher me. Seriously, 82 hour ALV?!?

Satchip has a boat, sort of. Its a part of a floating trailer park at St. Martin. It's a repulsive crimson red with a white stripe. I'd be leary of making a partnership with it as it might sink two days after Thanksgiving.

And if it does sink it's only because he wasn't paying attention and ran it aground trying to avoid my sunken dream. Ugh, if only. I'm going to reduce my raw that day.

.

You could also try the All or Nothing command for days off and combo's of days. I am on the bus and our ALV is 78 for the month (we will have 90 on reserve) and crew staffing wont release me for other duty. Crazy.
